Gyula Gömbös de Jákfa

- main representative of interwar Hungarian fascism
- Hungarian Prime Minister from 1932 to 1936
- joined the army at a very young age
- After the end of World War I, he entered politics - he became a member of Miklós Horthy's opposition government in Szeged and a close associate of Horthy
- when Béla Kun seized power in 1919 and the Communist Republic of Rad was established;
Gömbös founded the paramilitary organisation MOVE (Hungarian National Defence Party)
- Gömbös was a strong anti-Semite, a leading figure in the "White Terror"(persecution of communists) and the military resistance to the return of Kaiser Karl, and the architect of Hungary's withdrawal from the League of Nations
- His main political rival for most of the time was István Bethelen
- 1929 he was promoted to major general and took the post of minister of defence in Bethell's government
- 1932 he rose to the post of Prime Minister - but failed to force Horthy to dissolve the government and call new elections
- The first major act he did as Prime Minister was to visit Italy and sign cooperation treaties with Benito Mussolini
- when Adolf Hitler became German Chancellor on 31 January 1933,
it was Gömbös who was the first foreign leader to congratulate him personally in Berlin
- The alliance with Italy and the Reich had only one goal for Goebbels - to gain support for the intended war with the Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia to recover the territories lost at Trianon
- 6.10.1936 Gyula Gömbös died of kidney failure in Munich at the age of less than 50.
