Bristol Type 123

History :
In 1930 the British Air Ministry ( Air Ministry ) issued specification F.7/30 which called for a modern fighter aircraft.Specification F.7/30 called for :
1) a speed of 400 km/h.
2) armament with four fixed machine guns
Most of the British aircraft factories responded to this specification with their own projects, including ( Gloster Gladiator Mk.I , Supermarine Type 224, Hawker P.V.3 , Westland F.7/30 ). The Bristol aircraft factory responded to the specification with the Bristol Type 123, designed by chief designer Frank Barnwell. The first prototype was flown at the factory airfield at Filton on 12 June 1934 by test pilot C.F. Uwins. The very first test flights showed that the prototype was very unstable at higher speeds. Another problem in flying was the delayed development and mainly technical problems with the powerplant (frequent faults with the condensing steam cooling of the engine). Due to these technical problems, the project was stopped by Bristol and the aircraft did not enter series production.
The Bristol Type 132 was a single-engine biplane fighter of mixed construction, with the entire front of the prototype being all metal and the rest of the fuselage, wings and vertical tail surfaces covered by canvas. The cockpit was uncovered. The undercarriage was a solid cowled landing gear with a fixed tailwheel. The prototype was powered by a 695 hp Rolls-Royce Goshawk III engine with condensing steam cooling. The engine powered a two-bladed wooden non-buildable propeller. With this engine, the prototype reached a top speed of 378 km/h, with a cruising speed of 322 km/h. The prototype was armed with four fixed 7.7 mm Vickers machine guns, two on each side of the fuselage.
