V-4/40 (experimentální tank)

(Straussler tank)
V-4 (vontató 4 - tractor, type 4)

The origin of the experimental vehicle V-4 is shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain that the design came from the British factory Straussler Mechanization Ltd.

The V-4 was not the first to design a Straussler chassis. Its predecessor was two V-2 and V-3 machines from 1933-1935.

The author of the technical solution was a brilliant British designer of Hungarian origin Nicholas Straussler (06.08.1891-03.06.1966), who in 1936 had a prototype V-4 and its subsequent modifications made in the Hungarian company Weiss Manfréd Rt. (hereinafter WM). Some sources speak of four vehicles, but a study by archivist Attila Bonhardt states that only one piece was produced, which was rebuilt at least once at the customer's request.

This vehicle was demonstrated in 1936 in Italy and probably in Britain. Upon his return, it was rebuilt at the request of the Hungarian Ministry of the Army in the spring of 1938 and renamed the V-4/40. However, the subsequent tests of the vehicle turned out to be catastrophic. The vehicle was found to be very shaky and heavy. His driving characteristics were also very poor and made it impossible to aim. In short, his performance was worse than the army had originally promised, so there was no introduction of the V-4/40 in the armament of the Hungarian army.

Some sources also state that the V-4/40 tank was captured by the Red Army in 1945.
