The development began at the beginning of the 50s of the 20th century in the Soviet Union in KBM under the leadership of B.Č. Šavyrin. The recoilless cannon was approved for use by the Soviet Army in 1954. In the second half of the 1950s, the weapons were delivered to the Warsaw Pact armies, and to Vietnam and China.
In most armies, the cannon was phased out at the time when 73 mm SPG-9 were accepted into service
The cannon is used to destroy armored targets and firepower, lightly fortified defensive positions and also to destroy the enemy's manpower.
The barrel is not autofretted, it has a smooth bore.
