Hope this helps.

Albrecht Brandi, Der Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub un Schwerten und Brilianten bearer

Brandi and captain Wolfgang Lüth were the only naval officers bearing this highest German decoration.
Naval career of Albrecht Brandi strated in 1935. When Brandi was only naval cadet, he made an overseas voyage on board of light cruiser Emden. Later he served as 1st Watch Officer of M1 minesweeper.
When the war broke up Brandi took part in the shelling of Polish Westerplatte. Then he was transferred back to minesweeper and with her he took part in the invasion of Norway. As a skipper of M1 he took part in further operations in Norway since June.
In 1941 he made his first ever voyage on board of submarine under command of captain Erich Topp. During fall of 1942 Brandi took over command of his first submarine.
Brandi left the port of Kiel for his first combat mission on board of U-617 on 29 August 1942. He was to operate in the Northern Atlantic according to the orders given to him. Two more submarines left the port of Kiel at the same moment Brandi went to the sea. The group of these three submarines split up on 31. August to hunt enemy independently. On 5. October Brandi’s U-Boat was in Iceland Channel. That was the moment his crewmen were baptised of fire and they learned what „heavy sea“ did mean. Brandi sank first ship on 7. September. She had 1400 BRT.
Then he received orders for patrolling in St.George’s Channel. There he passed through the heaviest hurricane storm. Under such difficult conditions Brandi was able to find a convoy and to sink three of its ships – tanker with 10 000 BRT, cargo ship with 5 500 BRT and another cargo ship with 3 600 BRT. Two days later after such success he spotted another convoy and sank a vessel with 5000 BRT. Brandi was then spotted by a destroyer and was chased for 6 hours. The same day Brandi received the order to head to the Bay of Biscay. He reached ordered area on 3. October and on 8. October his ship was on anchor in St.Nazaire. During his first combat mission Brandi sank vessels with 28 000 BRT.

New orders were received during the stop in St.Nazaire. Brandi was to get through Gibraltar and start operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Heading African shores Brandi saw a lot of attractive targets for his torpedoes in the vicinity of Oran. He saw US fleet of various vessels, ranging from tugboats to huge passenger steamships disembarking troops, weapons and ammunition. To launch an attack meant to commit a suicide. The fleet was guarded by huge escort including small guardships and even Rodney and Nelson battleships.
Brandi put his U-Boat about Gibraltar again and slipped to the Mediterranean Sea. To attack enemy’s ships was not so easy in the Mediterranean Sea as was in Atlantic. Water in the sea was absolutely pellucid and Brandi’s U-Boat could be spotted even hidden in depth. That was not the biggest problem – the most important disadvantage for Brandi was the fact that enemy’s ships were equipped with RADAR. They were able to detect U-Boat even during night or under the cover of fog. Brandi was really cool-blooded skipper not afraid of attacking destroyers – the most important threat to U-Boat.
Brandi received his Ritterkreuz on 21. January 1943 and Eichenlaub on 11.April 1943.
Brandi left Toulon on 29. August 1943 to plunder enemy’s ships in the vicinity of Gibraltar. He attacked and sank one destroyer there.
Brandi’s U-Boat was spotted by plane during the night 11.-12. September. The plane dropped a cluster of bombs. The third bomb exploded below the keel and as a result of that explosion the main of boat was damaged and water was leaking into the conning tower of Brandi’s U-Boat. Water flooded main batteries and so poisonous chlorine gas was generated. The crew of AA gun reported to Brandi enemy plane was down.
Although damaged Brandi’s U-Boat was still fighting-fit and Brandi ordered to steer to the African coast and to do maintenance and necessary repairs.
Another plane suddenly appeared and bombed the U-Boat again with direct hit to her conning tower. Brandi’s U-Boat trying to escape on surface hit hidden rock in the distance of 200 m from the shore and all the men were ordered to abandon her.
Only three men – Brandi, 1st Watch Officer and boatsman remained on board to destroy papers and to prepare U-Boat for destruction by explosives.
Crewmen luckily saved on the soil were found by friendly bedouin and led to the nearest local authority office. Brandi’s U-Boat was wrecked on the beach of neutral Spanish Morocco. All the crewmembers went to Spain but Brandi, separated from his men, was covertly transported to German Naval Attaché to Madrid. There he received counterfeit passport with new identity of German embassy civilian employee and under such coverstory, which was necessary due to Spanish neutrality, he was transported to Spanish-French border and then to Germany.

Since January 1944 Brandi was on board of U 380 till the day she was destroyed by an air-raid in Toulon. Between April – July 1944 Brandi conducted operations with U 967 again in the Mediterranean Sea. Brandi received Schwerten to his Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub on 13. May 1944. Then he was organising operations in the Baltic Sea. He was ordered to attack Soviet vessels with the pack of 16 U-Boats under his command. But it did not happen – Soviet vessels did not leave the ports. Brandi received Brilianten to his previous awards on 24. November 1944. Because of not being very busy Brandi was given new order. He was to take command of special small operations unit (?Kleinkampf Verband Kommando???). When recruitment was launched and thousands of men volunteered for such missions highest commanders were quite surprised. Brandi’s men gained some success at the beginning of their operations but later losses were unbearable and thus operations were stopped by the decission of BdU.

Brandi had the same problems with livelihood as the majority of highly decorated naval officers had after the war. Shortly after the end of war he took responsibility of internation camp. (I would say he was under internation and was questioned.)
Later Brandi served out as a builder. When he intended to start studies at the university in Aachen Brandi was refused for being „militarist“. The same happened to him at State building school in Essen.
Later he become a friend of British commander of Essen who helped him to start studies there. Brandi became a well known architect and lots of nice buildings were built according to his plans in Brandi’s native town – in Dortmund.

When Brandi died 6. January 1966 at the age of 51 years, he left here his wife and six their children.

Well Juan, I have read your presentation. It is really well done and written in nice "diplomatic words" which must be used...
I am slightly afraid we do not provide any extra information on that event (I mean U-617 being wrecked on Spanish Morocco shore) - we only speak about that in rather rough but true words...

My dear friend Palič:
Thank you for your help!

Believe me that all the reviews on his biography are not as extensive. Quite the opposite of the many sources that I was able to see via the Internet.

There is a paragraph that I Particularly noteworthy,
Could you tell your friend where the author is based to these statements, what are his sources? It is very interesting that this hypothesis postulated:

Hello Juan,
Cyki has appeared on the surface and is sending his message on sources of his above mentioned article.
As he says, the majority of I-net reliable sources he used have disappeared unfortunately.
The only available sources online are www.uboat.net, www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de and wikipedia...
The story of Brandi's evasion is described in the book S meči a brilianty (Mit schwerten und brillanten) - ISBN80-7191-130-5 - page 181.
Link to extremely short review of the book is here: forum.valka.cz

That is all information we can provide to you at the moment.
