An interesting "field" modification of the L-29. Under the wings is a pair of German MG 17 machine guns.

A little bit about the suspension of German MG 17 machine guns under the wing of the Dolphin:

Citation :

Memories of Jan Hála

In the summer of 1971, I was part of the group that implemented the suspension system for MG 17 machine gun containers on L29 aircraft. It was carried out at the Bechyně airport, because the Czech-Budejovice airport was currently under a closure and the asphalt runway was being made. One group was preparing the components from semi-finished products that were perhaps delivered from Vodochody. And because not everything was delivered, it was necessary to make, for example, boxes for bullets. The kite-makers involved in this were Mr. Musil, Scheinpflug, David, Novák. Of the armourers, I think Mr. King. I, together with Maj. Alexa, Major Veverka, the head of the actual construction on the planes, Kundrlík and a soldier of the basic service Doucha carried out the construction of the planes in Bechnia.

The work itself took about two days. On the first day they dismantled the wings, turned them over, did the plumbing, put in the wiring. The work was mostly done outdoors because the weather was nice (see photos). Then the wing was mounted, the gun container was hung up, doling was done and everything was ready for wiring and testing. The next day was optical priming and actual function testing at the range. The aircraft was on jacks and supported by struts. The first time the aircraft was stopped, all 180 rounds were fired at a distance of about 100 yards with the required accuracy to test it. As I recall, the rounds dug a hole about 1 m deep on the mound, 15 to 20 cm in diameter. For the record, the trajectory of the machine gun rounds under both wings should theoretically have intersected at a distance of 400 metres. For the other modified aircraft, the ammunition was spared. The first firing was attended by the then deputy commander of the repair shop, Maj. Zlámal.
It was a nice job. For the first time, a Mi 4 helicopter took us to Bechyně with the material. Then we went there by car. Sometimes by helicopter, sometimes by private cars. There were basically no problems with the implementation itself, and the assembly was also not very laborious. There is no photo of the target shooting, but the shooting was quite accurate. As I was a soldier in basic service at that time, I do not know the details and numbers of rebuilt aircraft.

Text taken from the notes on the CD published for the anniversary of the Planá Airport near České Budějovice.

V normalizaci to ovšem zkončilo. Nevíte o tom někdo něco, prosím?
Dík za info
