This carbine had a new, improved breech design, which was also adopted by later rifles of the 1895 model. The bolt remained straight, without a pivoting handle, but with a greatly improved locking mechanism consisting of a pivoting bolt with two locking teeth in the front. This design was much more durable than the original one with one locking tooth, and was also shorter, allowing the cartridge box to be repositioned and connected to the bow. The slide was pulled out in an interesting way - the trigger tab was moved forward and the slide was then pulled out by simply pulling it backwards. The viewfinder was sectorised, as with previous models.
A certain number of these carbines were equipped with a non-removable folding needle bayonet - this was an experimental design, intended for the armament of gendarmes (gendarmerie).

Between 1890 and 1896, a total of 105,000 of these guns were produced. They were used by various armed forces and the weapons of these forces differed from each other in many details. For example:
the cavalry carbine had belt loops on the left side and had no bayonet lug or hook to "stack" the weapon.
The gendarme carbine had belt loops on the underside of the weapon and a bayonet lug on the right side. Like the cavalry carbine, it did not have a hook.
The naval carbine had belt loops on the bottom of the weapon, a bayonet lug on the left side, and unlike the previous weapons, it also had a hook used to set the weapon into a "trestle"
