Dornier tried to build a high-altitude bomber, which was to achieve high performance, based on theoretical work obtained from DVL (Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luftfart). Dornier's first Do 217 L project with a thruster was not implemented, the second Do 217 P project was ordered after the demonstration of a wooden model. In October 1941, representatives of the technical office ordered the construction of three prototypes.
The basis was the serial Do 217 E-2, which, however, underwent fundamental changes. The propulsion unit consisted of two Daimler-Benz DB 603 B engines, each with an output of 1,750 horsepower, so that these engines achieve power at high altitudes, required a large amount of air and this supply of compressed air was provided by a third DB 605 T-0 engine in the bomb bay. centrifugal two-stage compressor. Compressed air passed through large coolers between the fuselage and the engine nacelles, this cooling of the air still caused problems and was never completely effective. This system was designated as HZ-Anlage (altitude compressor center). The DB 603 B engines powered large four-bladed propellers. The total power of these engines was 3,500 horsepower at takeoff, 3,720 horsepower at an altitude of 2,100 m and at an altitude of 13,720 m, the maximum power was still 2,880 horsepower.
Another major modification was the installation of a pressurized cabin. The cabin formed a completely separate unit, which was embedded in the fuselage. The glazing was made of straight glass and the prototypes did not carry any main armament.
The first prototype with the designation BK + IR took off on June 6, 1942, during the first tests there were problems with intercoolers of compressed air and their modifications also began. After the engine fire, a wing with a larger span (new 24.30 m) was mounted in the prototype, which was certainly more advantageous for high-altitude aircraft. In the autumn of 1942, prototypes of V2 and V3 were also included in the tests. never reached, the actual height reached was 13,400 m. The engines suffered from overheating and other failures, so the whole project was completed in the spring of 1943.
However, Dornier did not give up and built three more pre-production aircraft Do 217 P-0. These machines were to represent an exploratory version and their main separating element was the transfer of intercoolers to the leading edges of the wings. These machines were already armed, carrying three double machine guns MG 81 Z , their use was possible only when the cabin pressurization was switched off. These machines were not operationally deployed.
