He was born 26. January 1896 in Pozsony (also Prešpurk, today Bratislava) in Hungary. His father was Hungarian and worked as a gardener in Bratislava cadet school, his mother was Slovak. Himself the Kiss he spoke fluent in both languages. His grandfather Eleméri és ittebei Kiss Erno (owned estates in Eleméri in Vojvodina, in today Serbia) was a general in the revolutionary period of 1848 - 1849 sided with the Hungarian rebels. After its completion was October, 1849 in Arad executed and his estate was confiscated.
Apprenticed as a mechanic, later attended technical school. In the Great war he joined as a volunteer 26. October 1914 to Infantry regiment no. 72 crew in today's Bratislava. On the Russian front in the Carpathians was injured. After treatment he was transferred to pilot training in the Wiener Neustadt (Vienna New Town). Day 8. in April 1916 he was issued a Hungarian international pilot's license FAI no. 57 and 16. July 1916 the austrian international pilot's license FAI no. 724.
In the spring of 1916 so he joined the Flik 24, commanded by hauptman Gustave Cold. At the beginning of October 1916 he was wounded. Here at Flik 24 in October 1917 he shot down 7 aircraft of the enemy.
In November 1917 he was transferred to the fighter Flik 55J, commanded by hauptmann von Maier.
Here to 27. January 1918, he shot down a further 12 aircraft of the enemy. That day flew from Pergine probably on the airplane Albatros D.III (Oef) 153.47. While flying at him, attacked several british Camelů. Probably one of them, captain M. B. Frew from the british 45. squadron RAF, hit the aircraft Stabsfeldwebl Josef Kiss and his alone into the abdominal cavity. Still, however, managed to land at the private airport.
Had severe surgery and after a partial recovery is already in April 1918 to report to the Flik 55J at the airport in Pergine. In may of 1918 already, he flew operational flights. So off i 24. may, 1918, at 10 o'clock in the morning on the aeroplane Phönix D.IIa 422.10 with a white stripe on the aft of the aircraft. Together with him took off Feldwebel Alexander Kasza on the airplane Phönix D.IIa 422.14 and Feldwebel Stefan Kirjak also on the airplane Phönix D.IIa. He was in the air to meet the military aircraft from Flik 60J and operate together. However, it has already happened. At a given position (to the east of lake Garda) operated already three-person swarm Camelů from the british 66. Squadron RAF, in the composition of the major Barker (Camel B.6313, marked Of), leutnant Birks (Camel B.6424, labeled Z) and leutnant Apps (Camel B.5190, labeled And). The british airmen are first able to disperse the three-person swarm from Flik 60J (10:40), and a few minutes later (10:50) rushed to the three-person swarm since Flik 55J, who led the Stabsfeldwebel Josef Kiss. In the subsequent aerial combat with major Berkerovi managed to hit the machine of Josef Kiss. His plane hit the side of a hill Campolongo (1779m/m) in 11 hours 24. may 1918.
He was buried two days later 26. may 1918 at the cemetery in Pergine. Over the cemetery flew the enemy planes and dropped a funeral wreath, on which the ribbon has been written "Our last salute to Our brave enemy."
Three days after his death, 27. may 1918 was held the funeral at the cemetery by the airport Pergine in Italy.
Because he had completed high school education, he couldn't be recognized by statute the one-year volunteer - i.e. an officer. After his death, for his combat merits two days later 26. may 1918 was nevertheless posthumously promoted to officer - Leutnant in der Reserve as a single pilot petty officer To. in To. Luftfahrtruppe.
In 1971 they were his remains exhumed and buried at the cemetery Ossario in Rovereto.

Notes:
FAI - Federation Auronautique Internationale - the International pilot's federation
RAF - Royal Air Force - was formed 1. April 1918 the separation and renaming of the RFC - Royal Flying Corps.
