Sappeur- und Pionierauszeichnung
Established on 9.9.1893 as a badge to recognize trained members of technical units under the name Arbeitsauszeichnung für die Pioniertruppe. It is a brass circular badge with a chakan and crossed spades in the centre. This badge was worn by selected soldiers as a sign of mastery in all kinds of earthmoving and technical work.
In 1906, the badge began to be produced with a black centre and was renamed Sappeurauszeichnung.
On 14 November 1910, the wearing of the badge was extended to soldiers who were assigned to technical units from other corps or services. The badge was similar to the Sappeurauszeichnung, but for the troops of the Honvéd had a red centre and was renamed Pionierauszeichnung für Truppenpioniere. Soldiers who were to receive the badge had to pass a theoretical and practical knowledge exam according to the type of army they served in. For infantry and Jägertruppen units, the examination focused on surface technical work, bridge building and minor skills. For cavalry he had to demonstrate a similar level of skill and also knowledge and skill in handling explosives and detonators.
In addition to the types described above, there are also variants with smooth edges. This is not an officially established type, probably just a manufacturer's variation.
The diameter of the medal is 44 mm.
