He was born in Christchurchu 29. September 1917. Worked as a technical designer and 3. April 1939 joined the RNZAF. After the completion of the pilot training, which he completed in Digramu, should be reassigned to the RAF, the outbreak of the war, however, interfered with and Newton stayed in the RNZAF. He first worked as a staff pilot in April 1940 passed the course instructor and then he taught the new pilots for 2.IFTS. After the entry of Japan into the war, formed RNZAF Fighter OTU, where in October 1942 Newton, he served as an instructor.
He then became a squadron commander in the newly built 17. squadron RNZAF, which was armed with the Kittyhawky. In July, becoming its commander and the squadron is shifting to the New Hebrides to the airport Espiritu Santo, where she is responsible for the air defense. About a month later, but shifting to the center of the fighting on the island of Guadalcanal, and engaged in aerial combat.
Now the first combat flight he almost became fatal, because of its Curtiss was engulfed in flames and he had to to save use a parachute. In the ensuing battle Newton scored two certain and one probable victory over a force to be reckoned Zery. At the end of February 1944 the unit was withdrawn from operations and returned to New Zealand. Its pilots have gained a total of 19 certain victory and Newton with a 5-1-0 aircraft became the most successful fighter of the RNZAF in the fighting against the Japanese (table here). It received DFC and at the same time he left active service. He then worked in various staff positions, he was promoted to Wing Commander and in April 1945 he became head of operations of the RNZAF.
Since the air force left in march 1946, devoted to pre-war profession and worked for General Motors Corporation.
