After the end of World War II, the USMC decided in 1949 to modernize 1,200 of the least worn LVT-3.
The modification consisted of raising the side walls of the cargo compartment to the level of the driver's compartment and adding overhead hatches to protect against shrapnel and grenades and to reduce water intrusion into the cargo compartment. A machine gun turret was added between the cab hatches.
This variant was used in the Korean War. After the end of the war, they were either rebuilt and sold to the Allies or put into storage and scrapped.
