5.5 inch BL howitzer Mk.III
Development began in January 1939, and the aim was to develop a weapon that would replace the 60-pounder gun and 6-inch howitzer in the armament. The type entered the armament of the bpj units in May 1942, with its first combat deployment in the Western Desert of Africa. It remained in service after the end of World War II, when the Mk.IV type was introduced into service.
