He was born 1. January 1913 in India.
In 1926 he entered the navy, where he served until 1934. Two years later he was accepted into the RAF and in may 1937 was, after the completion of pilot training, sent to the 65. squadron. In October 1939 became commander of the squadron at the 145. squadron, which was armed with Hurricanes. With it then intervened in the fighting during the evacuation from Dunkirk and scored you six certain victory. For these achievements he received the 21. June 1940, honors the DFC. Followed by participation in the Battle of Britain. The most successful day had 8. August, when during the three flights shot down two Bf 109, two Bf 110s and one Ju 87. Followed by a second award of DFC. In mid-August is the unit withdrawn to rest in Scotland, and Boyd is becoming the provisional commander. Under his command, the squadron returned in October to the south, and again plugs into the ongoing battle. In the December returns of Boyd's command John Peelovi and becoming an instructor.
The event returns in June 1941 as commander of 501. squadron, which was equipped with Spitfires Mk.II. It gains three of the last sure victories, inter alia, one Ju 88 sestřelený in the night from 7. 8. July 1941 to the south of Portsmouth.
In August 1941, becoming commander of the wing at the airport Middle Wallop, which leads over occupied Europe until the end of the year 1941. Wing was at that time armed with a standard Spitfire Mk.In and 13. October has Boyd scored the last victory, when the above Arques damaged a Bf 109F. His accomplishments, in total acquired 15+3-5+1-4 vitězství, were valued granting to the DSO.
This was followed by a number of staff functions, in 1943, he served with the 210. Group in the Middle east and subsequently in the year 1944 became commander of the 281. wing, Balkan Air Force, which included yugoslav squadron of the RAF.
Of his subsequent career it is not much known, from the RAF left in 1947 as a W/Cdr and he died 21. January 1975.
