Colonel v.v. František Cyprich
František Cyprich was born on October 1, 1917 in Svrčinovec in the family of a railway engineer. At the age of eight he lost both parents and was brought up by his aunt. He showed his desire to fly when he joined the aeroclub in Piešt'any. He joined the army on 01.10.1936. From 30.09.1937 he was assigned as a member of Squadron 39M. R. Štefánik's Aviation Regiment 3. He took part in the defence of Slovakia against Hungarian aggression in March 1939, and also fought in the Polish Campaign. After the reorganization of the Slovak Air Force, he served in the newly established Squadron 11 (formed by merging existing squadrons), with which he also took part in the fighting in USSR in the autumn of 1941. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Air Force on 30 November 1941. At the end of February, 26.02.1942 he was involved in the retraining of Slovak pilots for Messerschmitt Bf 109 E aircraft. The training took place in Grove, Denmark.
On 3 July 1942 he returned to Piešt'any from training together with six other pilots. He took part in further advanced training and on 04.10.1942 as a member of Squadron 13 arrived at Majkop.
He achieved his first kill on 31 January 1943 when he and Svejdik attacked a Il-2 landing at Kropotkin airfield. Cyprich and Svejdik each achieved one kill, but Svejdik was subsequently shot down. On 1 April 1943, he was promoted to ensign. While operating in the east with Squadron 13 he achieved a total of 12 kills.
On his return from the front, he was made commander of cash company. From 08.11.1943 he was a teacher of practical flying in Flying School. After the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, he joined the rebels and served in the Combined Squadron. He flew 22 combat sorties, during which he shot down 2 and a half aircraft. He managed to achieve the first insurgent shoot-down in the SNP when on 02.09.1944 he took off in a biplane Avia B-534 and shot down a Hungarian transport Ju 52/3m.
Four days later, still in cooperation with Bozik, he shot down a reconnaissance Fw 189. On 07.10.1944 he flew by transport aircraft to the USSR, where he was retrained on Soviet equipment and was assigned to 1st Czechoslovak Mixed Air Division. In March 1945 he was promoted to battalion sergeant. After the war he served in the Czechoslovak Military Air Force, from 15 July 1948 he served in Air Regiment 1 "Zvolensky".
He was discharged to the reserve on 30.09.1958 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After his discharge he worked in Trenčín Aircraft Repair Plant until 1973. In 1991 he was rehabilitated and received the rank of retired colonel.
Following the sad news that Col. v. v. František Cyprich died on 31 January 2009, I plan to expand the article as it is not sufficient in its current form.
