Oberfeldwebel Willi Reschke

Willi Reschke was born on 3 February 1922 in Mühlow in the Mark Brandenburg region. He joined the Luftwaffe in February 1941. He began his military training with the Flieger-Ausbildung- Regiment in Königsberg-Neumark. Initially he was trained as an aircraft mechanic, but at the end of spring 1942 he was transferred to the pilot course. He first received pilot training on gliders and then switched to powered aircraft at Flugzeugführerschule 51 in Elbing. In June 1943, Reschke was transferred to Jagdgruppe 102 at Zdrbat airfield for operational training. Here he trained until March 1944.

After completing his pilot training, Reschke was transferred to JG 302 based at Götzendorf near Vienna. It was a truly respectable performance for a rookie. In another air battle on July 7, 1944, Reschke again fought B-24 bombers. During the attack, Reschke's on-board guns jammed on his Bf-109G-6. Reschke decided to crash into his target. He therefore aimed his Messerschmitt at the tail surfaces of the B-24. He managed to cut off the bomber's elevator with his propeller and it crashed uncontrolled near Malacek in Slovak territory. Reschke's machine also became uncontrollable after the impact and the pilot only with the greatest difficulty managed to leave the damaged machine in time and landed safely on a parachute near the burning wreckage of his victim. On 24 August Reschke celebrated his success over another Liberator near Jindřichův Hradec. Moments later, however, his aircraft was hit by defensive fire, which damaged the engine. Reschke immediately had to make an emergency landing with a seized engine. However, the P-51 USAAF pilots noticed the limping messer and opened fire on the crippled machine. On 29 August, Reschke managed to shoot down B-17 south of Zlín. During this attack on B-17 Reschke flew into the fire of another Bf-109. The missiles hit Reschke's machine and he had to make an emergency landing near Uherské Hradiště. By the end of August 1944, Reschke had already scored 14 victories.

At the end of September 1944, after being retrained to Fw-190A-8, I./JG 302, in whose ranks Reschke served, was redesignated III./JG 301. On 1 January 1945, Feldwebel Reschke shot down another B-17. It was his 22nd victory. However, once again his machine was Fw-190A-8 hit by retaliatory fire and Reschke had to bail out again by parachute.

On 13 February 1945, Reschke received the Deutsche Kreuz in Gold. In February, Reschke is transferred to Staff Squadron JG 301.

In April, the staff squadron received new equipment. On 14 April 1945, Reschke fought a group of Tempest V in the cockpit of Ta-152H"Yellow 1". Thanks to the outstanding characteristics of the new machine, Reschke outmaneuvered his opponent W/O Mitchell of 486 Sqn. and shot him down. The engagement took place at very low altitude, for which the Tempest V. was optimized. This makes Reschke's victory over this adversary all the more valuable.

On April 20, 1945, Oberfeldwebel Willi Reschke received the Ritterkreuz. At the time of the award, he had 25 confirmed victories to his credit. At that time, JG 301, stationed in the vicinity of Berlin, was already fighting on two fronts. Oberfeldwebel Reschke took off as a pair led by Oblt. Stahl. Together with them, they took part in this flight in a swarm force Ofw. Loos, Ofw. Keil and Fw. Blum. Five Ta-152H took off and set course for Berlin. In the Zosen area, the pilots in Ta-152H saw a group of Soviet fighters in Jats-9 below, attacking ground targets with impunity. The German fighters passed them undetected and headed for their target. After the attacks on ground targets ended, the squadron over Berlin split into a pair led by Oblt. Stahl and a trio led by Ofw. Loos. Oblt. Stahl went south with Reschke and Ofw. Loos with the rest of the squadron to the north to ascertain the enemy's position and to specify the position of the front line around Berlin. During the flight south, four Russian Yak-9 crossed the path of the pair led by Oblt. Stahl. Reschke spotted a swarm of Yaks coming in from the right. He radioed Oblt. Stahl of the approaching enemy, but he did not respond to his call. One of the yaks got behind Stahl's plane and opened fire. The tracers flew right past Stahl's machine. Reschke got into a good firing position on the Yak, which was threatening the Oblt flying in front. Stahl. Reschke warned Stahl by radio, but he did not respond. Just as Reschke was about to open fire, a grenade hit the fuselage of his machine and tracers began flying around the cockpit. Another Yak-9 was sitting on his tail, firing all his weapons. Reschke took a sharp turn to get out of the Yak's fire. Thanks to the excellent performance of the Ta-152H, Reschke soon got behind the tail of one of the Yaks and fired a short burst at it with all weapons. The Yak-9 exploded in a cloud of flames and smoke. A trio of Yak-9s and Willi Reschke's lone Ta-152H remained in the sky. The machine Oblt. Stahl disappeared to an unknown destination. The Yaks took on the lone Fockewulf. Thanks to his piloting skills and the qualities of his machine, Reschke managed to turn sharper than his opponents. The leader of the Russians instructed his numbers to withdraw from the fight and engage Reschke alone. Thanks to the performance of the Ta-152, Reschke managed to outmaneuver the Russian and hit his machine. As it crashed to the ground with a trail of dark smoke north of Erkner, near Neunhagen. The other Yaks left the battlefield. Reschke returned safely to his airfield. These were his last two victories. Oblt. Stahl was declared missing in action. The rest of the squadron also fought the Yaks and Ofw. Loos shot down two of them as well.

Willi Reschke lived to see the end of the war in good health. During the war he flew a total of 70 combat sorties and achieved a total of 27 confirmed victories. Among them, 20 kills of four-engine bombers. He himself was shot down eight times, four of which required the use of a parachute. He was wounded once.

After the war Willi Reschke became a dairy farmer and never returned to flying. He is the author of the book JG301/JG302 Wilde Sau. He was active in organizing social gatherings of former Luftwaffe members.
