JAWA 350 typ 634

Motorcycle Jawa 350

The Jawa 350 motorcycle, type 634-5-16 is a single-track motor vehicle. It is structurally based on the Jawa 350 touring motorcycle, type 634-8-00. Production of the civilian type 634 began in 1973. In the same year, this motorcycle won one of the toughest motorcycle races in the world, the legendary "Six Day" held that year in the United States. The military type differs from the civilian type mainly in the way of engine lubrication (military type 634-5-16 does not have lubrication with an oil pump), lighting, surface treatment of individual parts and mounting of the carrier. Other interventions in the structure were only small, their goal was to increase reliability (better anti-corrosion treatment, insulation, ...) during demanding operation.
The motorcycle was used to transport people, their personal equipment and armament, as well as luggage and cargo up to a total weight of 180 kg. It was designed for operation on roads - roads, field and forest roads, off-road driving and wading.

A short history of the Jawa 634 motorcycle
The Jawa 350 type 634 was a highly anticipated motorcycle in its day, a truly new motorcycle after many years. The previous mass-produced model Jawa 350 type 360, produced until the end of the 1960s, was more or less no different from the motorcycle Jawa-ČZ 350 type 354 (in appearance, performance, parts). At the beginning of the seventies, when the whole world was riding (even in this category) on modern, mostly four-stroke motorcycles, even domestic "consumers" expected a really new and promising machine. The predecessor of the 634, the motorcycles of the types UŘ, Jawa 250/350 Unified series and Jawa Bizon (type 623/633) unfortunately proved to be a dead end and did not catch on with customers. Therefore, the development of a new machine was undertaken. It was already taken into account that traffic would be mainly east of our borders. By 1973, exports to the then USSR amounted to 750,000 machines. And the Jawa 350/364 was the one millionth machine exported to the USSR. The design of the machine represented an attempt at a modern machine, precipitated by the need for simplicity and lack of finance. The relatively modern twin frame, was degraded by the placement/use of an engine which has a base and parts identical to the Jawa 350 type 18 Perak engine, from 1948! Nothing has changed in the technology, the slight increase in power was a small patch. Already in a contemporary test in the World of Engines in 1973 (No.43), the editor of the text, perhaps unwisely, allowed himself to be a bit of a prick. He writes "350cc motorcycles are the weakest class in world production at the present time" and adds that this will not make it easy on the world market. However, he goes on to say that the 634 "...is actually the top motorcycle on our roads". The reason for this, of course, is that there is competition from "...a small number of mostly older, more powerful foreign machines."
A comparison, or the rivalry between the west and Japan.
The Japanese at the time introduced and produced quality motorcycles with modern styling and good quality. Of course, they had their dead ends of development, their flies with each type, but this is not the subject of the article. I just want to point out that quality, technology, sophistication, and money came first and foremost on the side of the competitors of the Jawa. If I mention two-strokes from the land of the rising sun just compare the engine performance. I'll take the Suzuki GT380, for example, which in the 1974 model year had the following performance figures: an air-cooled 371cc inline three-cylinder, two-stroke. It made 37 horsepower at 7500 rpm. The transmission had 6 speeds. The 20hp of the 634 and the 4 speed, well...at least the weight of the machines, 175kg is the same. Yes, let's say it was a 380 and with one extra cylinder, it's more than our 350,..so let's compare the same cubic capacity. The Yamaha RD250, the type produced between 1973 and 1975, right at the time of the arrival of our home model. The engine is a two-cylinder, two-stroke. But that's where the similarities end. Power is 39bhp at 7500rpm and a top speed of 169km.... and a disc brake on the front wheel. The Jawa company, perhaps to highlight the timelessness of the existing drum design, didn't start fitting these until almost exactly 20 years after the Japanese on the Jawa 350 type 640! They had, who knows why, for several years now had two discs on the front wheel and one on the rear...multi-piston. I chose the Japanese models to start with, the western ones were not that classy let's say. After all, the Italian factories, to "defend" against the Japanese motorcycle invasion, started producing new superbike models. It's hard to pick or mention anything, because the comparison perhaps can't even be called a comparison. The Benelli Tornado 650 S, a modern four-stroke twin-cylinder sports motorcycle, produced 44.6 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and reached a speed of 175km. As I own Jawa 350 type 634 motorcycles from 1973, 1974, 1975 and an export gold "pitavalka" and have ridden them a bit, I can't even imagine in my wildest dreams riding this type of motorcycle at more than 120, let alone 175...much less into a corner. But the Benelli Tornado 650 S has Jawa-like drum brakes and Jawa 50 Pioneer-like exhausts! Don't even look at machines like the Ducati 750GT or God forbid the 750SS. And British-made? The Triumph Bonneville T140, for example. Four-stroke, one disc brake up front, 750...49hp and five speeds. A step ahead of us again. The build quality is a few notches above the foreign "western" production. While it's great to read praise in a periodical about how the frame was machine welded, it certainly was on western machines, but the subsequent machining was, in my opinion, zero. Scabs, beads, welds and unrounded welds that you can get hurt on just fine are not uncommon. The quality of the chrome plating, paintwork is also terrible. With chrome, this is mostly about prep before applying the gloss coat, i.e. sanding and polishing. Mostly, the overall obsolescence of the engine and design (disc brakes) is just a sigh that always comes to my mind as a "motor-lover" over any machine from the west at the time. This text is in no way intended to depress owners of the 634. Nevertheless, there is a Russian joke about the Java 350 634:
A policeman talking to a doctor in the autopsy room.
"...Andrei, how many 634s did they bring in today?"
"...15!"
"....aha,.so there's one still running somewhere".

This type of machine was used by all armed forces in the Czechoslovakia. The army machines were all green with matt chrome on the exhaust system. Police motorcycles (then VB, public security) were painted yellow with a white stripe and the letters VB. They were of course modified against the production machines. The military version by using a front light with shield and carrier. Police had a protective fiberglass shield with plexiglass and a large one to protect the legs. Additionally, some machines had a shortened saddle, due to the mounting of the radio box. A warning light/flasher was mounted on the rear.
