historie/History
The squadron was formed on June 16, 1941 at the base Baginton in Great Britain as a fighter unit. Until March of the following year, she trained, patrolled the Irish Sea and briefly provided operational training for pilots of other units. She then moved to the south of England and began offensive raids on occupied Europe.
At the end of May 1942, the unit was withdrawn from combat and began preparing to move to Australia (along with the 54th and 452nd Squadron ). In June, all 3 squadrons set out for Melbourne, where they arrived in August. Until December, the squadron was engaged in training. Subsequently, she moved to the north of the continent and joined the air defense of the port Darwin. With the decline of Japanese activity in the area, the unit became part of the newly formed 80th Wing of the RAAF in July 1944 and began training in direct support of Allied troops in the liberation of the Dutch East Indies. In December 1944, the squadron was transferred to the state of the RAAF and formally ends its activities within the RAF. In January 1945, she moved to the island of Morotai and joined the fighting, which she continued until the end of the war. She mostly attacked ground targets, but also took part in air combat.
With the end of the war, on November 7, 1945, it would be officially disbanded at the Labuan base in Malaysia.
During World War II (from inception until December 1944), the unit was part of the RAAF, but was subject to RAF command and operational control under the designation 457 Squadron RAF
