Mountain Gate (extinct)
The Mountain Gate was one of the New Town's gates, and the only one that could be easily placed in the oldest period of the town's existence, i.e. in the period of the town's fortification. It was a massive structure of square plan, with walls plainly plastered without ornamental stonework or plasterwork. It is vaulted with a glass arch. The portal of the gate receding behind the face of the façade was set into the rectangular area in which the drawbridge was formerly located. Last roofed with a low gabled roof. On the upper floor was the gate keeper's flat. In the 19th century the gate equipment (chains and weights) were gradually taken down and in 1828 the towers and bars were removed. On 25 April 1905, demolition work began, after which extensive landscaping of the roads and the square was carried out, in many places the ground was lowered by more than 1 metre, while locally the ground was raised.
