motto / Motto

history
The squadron was formed on 3 March 1942 at Kirton in Lindsey as a fighter unit made up of mostly New Zealand personnel. It was initially armed with Hurricane aircraft, but by July it had been re-equipped with Typhoons and, in addition to bomber escorts, mainly attacked ground targets in occupied Europe. From April 1944, it began rearming to Tempest machines and was involved both in preparations for the invasion and in protecting England from V-1 missiles, of which its pilots shot down 223.5.After this threat had passed, it moved to France and supported advancing British forces until the end of the war, until Germany, where it then remained as part of the British occupation forces, and here it was also disbanded on 7 September that year.
The unit was part of the RNZAF, but was under the command and operational control of the RAF as No. 486 Squadron RAF.
