The squadron was formed on 12 August 1941 at Leuchars as a unit equipped with torpedo-carrying bombers. Until the end of the war it conducted reconnaissance flights, anti-submarine patrols and attacked German E-boats, initially along the Norwegian coast and over the North Sea, from late 1943 over the North Sea, along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia.
During World War II, the unit was part of the RNZAF (New Zealand Air Force) but was under the command and operational control of the RAF (British Royal Air Force) as No. 489 Squadron RAF.
