1972 Ugandsko - tanzánijský konflikt

Introduction:

In modern African history, Uganda and Tanzania were initially under two different superpowers - Uganda as part of British East Africa and Tanzania (or Tanganyika, as the mainland part of the federation was called) as part of German East Africa. After the end of World War I, Tanganyika, as a Commonwealth Trust Territory, was placed under the administration of Great Britain and was incorporated into the territories administered by British East Africa. After independence, their fate and paths diverged. While Tanzania was ruled by President Julius Nyerere continuously, Uganda was ruled by a succession of persons in power, and their rotation was not always in accordance with democratic principles.

In 1971, Uganda, Idi Amin Dada came to power through a military coup, replacing the ousted President Milton Obote. The subsequent bloody purges among supporters of the previous government caused many supporters of the ousted president to flee to neighbouring countries. The best organisation of opposition groups was from the beginning in Tanzania, where armed formations were also organised and preparing to invade Uganda with the main aim of removing Idi Amin.

Brief description of the conflict:

In 1972, the first military conflict broke out between Uganda and militants coming from Tanzania with the aim of overthrowing Amin's government. On 17.09.1972, Obote and his followers crossed the border from Tanzania in 77 trucks and occupied military installations in Uganda Masako town. After the successful action, instead of advancing deep into the country, they stayed put and waited for the outbreak of a nationwide uprising against Amin, which never came. The dictator asked Libya for help. Colonel Gaddafi, Libya's president, obliged, providing 3,000 well-armed Libyan soldiers, 5 C-130H Hercules transport planes and, as an added bonus, several LARAF (Libyan Air Force) Dassault Mirage 5Ds operating out of Uganda's Entebbe airport in the south of the country. The presence of the Libyan soldiers and air force made an immediate impact on the combat capability of the Ugandan Army, hence as early as 20.09.20.09.1972, the Ugandan Armyground offensive supported by Ugandan aircraft MiG-17 and MiG-21, the Ugandan Air Force simultaneously bombed targets in Tanzanianborder towns of Bukoba and Mwanza. The rebels were subsequently crushed by Ugandan and Libyan troops and their remnants retreated back into Tanzania.
i]Libyan Arab Republic Air Force (LARAF) Mirage-5D aircraft also participated in combat operations against the insurgents.[/i
