History and Usage:
In 1946, LeO 451 was dismantled from one aircraft in Algeria and the aircraft was experimentally converted to a high-speed transport aircraft. Due to problems with the originally considered Gnome-Rhone 14N engines, Pratt & Whitney R-1830-67 engines with an output of 1200 hp were used on the prototype. This machine could carry 6 passengers with a cruising speed of 400 km/h for a distance of 3500 km. The aircraft was designated LeO 453.
During 1947, another 39 aircraft were gradually rebuilt, which were assigned new serial numbers from 2 to 40, regardless of the original serial numbers. The first 30 rebuilt machines were handed over to the Arme del'Air (French Air Force). Of these machines, part was stored in EAA warehouses 1/615 and 3/615 and the rest were put into service with various units in France and in the colonies - GLA 45 ( Groupe de Liaison Aerienne) (Bufarik), GLA 46 (Rabat), GLA 47 (Tunisia), GLA 48 (Dakar), GLA 49 (Brazzaville). Other manufactured machines were adapted for special search and rescue operations with eight crew members, including three observers, and three lifeboats were stored in the former bombers' premises. They flew in the SASM 98 (Istree) and SASM 99 (Maison Blanche in Algeria).
LeO 453 with serial numbers over 35 were classified in Esc until June/June/06 1951. 11S ( Aeronavale
), then briefly operated as search and rescue aircraft and in early 1952 were handed over to GLA 45.
Of the 22 LeO 453 that were in service at the end of the 1940s, 13 more served in 1952. 2 machines were in GLA 48 and 11 in GLA 45, which also included machines used for maritime rescue operations. Between 1952-54, GLA 45 included aircraft with serial numbers 5, 13, 16, 17, 18, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30, 35, 38 and 39.
At the beginning of 1956, GLA 45 was disbanded and the only unit equipped with aircraft LEO 453 remained GLA 48. In the composition of this unit was a total of 8 pieces LeO 453 and several AAC-1 Toucan (transport Ju 52/3m French production). Military career LeO 45 was slowly coming to an end, when the last two aircraft in the GLA 48 were recognized as flying and incompetent additional service in September/September/09/1957 (in April/April/04/1957, aircraft with numbers 5, 12, 15, 17 and 30 still flew).
Several machines were also used in the civilian sector. Two machines LeO-453, Reg. No. F-BBYV (N.31) and F-BBYY, together with two aircraft B-17 have been used since 1947 4. Esc. GEP ( Groupe d'Escadrilles Photographiques) (Creil), which performed cartographic tasks for IGN ( Institut Geographique Nationale) (v 3. Esc GEP also served 5 pieces LeO 455F (LeO 455Ph) with No. 1-5, reg.no. F- BBLD, F-BBTM, F-BBTN, F-BBTO and F-BCAG).
