Arsenal VG-30 - VG-40 - version overview
Arsenal de l'Aeronautique in Villacoublay - a purely state-owned enterprise
The letters VG gen.Ing.Verniss - director and Jean Galtier - designer
Arsenal VG-30
The prototype of the light fighter with Potez 12Dc engine (610 hp), the engine failed and was replaced by Hispano-Suiza 12X (690 hp) and flown on October 1, 1938. The tests went well, but Caudron was already building light fighters.
Arsenal VG-31
A prototype fighter that was tested only in the wind tunnel, the small wing area did not prove successful and the aircraft was not flown. The Hispano-Suiza 12Y-31 engine (860 hp)
Arsenal VG-32
The prototype fighter was built, but due to the rapid advance of the Germans it was not flown. It was a VG-33 with an American Allison V-1710-C15 engine (1,150 hp) and armed with two HS-404 guns and two MAC 34M-39 machine guns. Production was to be carried out by Michaelin.
Arsenal VG-33
It was ordered in a production run of 1,000, was to be produced by several suppliers, and about 160 aircraft were built. From prototypes and a few production machines assembled the EAA-301 test squadron at Orleans-Bricy.
Arsenal VG-34
A prototype with a Hispano-Suiza 12Y-45 high-altitude engine, the first takeoff took place on January 20, 1940. The fuselage was from VG-33-02.
Arsenal VG-35
Prototype derived from VG-33-04, perhaps with Hispano-Suiza 12Y-51 ( 1,100 hp) engine. I have no further information.
Arsenal VG-36
It was intended to replace the VG-33 in production, was aerodynamically modified, Hispano-Suiza 12Y-52 ( 1,100 hp) engine, first flight took place on 14 May 1940. Max speed 590 km/h at an altitude of 7,000 m.
Arsenal VG-37
Only a project, it was to be VG-36, but the engine was to be turbocharged by a Szydlowski turbocharger.
Arsenal VG-38
Only a project, it was to be a VG-36, but the engine was to be turbocharged by a Brown-Boveri turbocharger.
Arsenal VG-39
The prototype was flown on May 3, 1940, powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Z engine (1,200 hp) reaching a speed of 625 km/h at an altitude of 5,700 m. The armament was reinforced with 1x HS 404 and 6x MAC 34M-39.
Arsenal VG-40
Only a project, it was to be a VG-39 with a Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine (1,030 hp) and armament of 2x HS-404 and 4x MAC 34M-39, all in wings.
