Chamelot-Delvigne 11mm Model 1873 as the full name of this interesting weapon is the first widely introduced revolver with a double action centerfire mechanism in Europe. The Model 1873 was introduced for reserve officers and the only slightly modified Model 1874 for active officers, The Model 1874 differs from the older version at first glance by being blue (the older one is in metallic colour, i.e. "silver" ) and by having the cylinder lightened with grooves (the older model has a cylinder without grooves). Both guns were produced concurrently and are basically the same gun with only minor differences.
The revolver has a closed frame and the loading is from the right side (Abadie flap). It was produced at the State Armoury in St. Etienne , and after its successful introduction in France, this model was also adopted by the armies of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Switzerland. According to some accounts, it was also used in Greece and Sweden, but here it seems to have been an officer-owned weapon not introduced by the army in question.
For the revolver, the Modell 73 cartridge marked 11x17.8R was introduced, chambered for a lead bullet weighing 11g. The cartridge was originally filled with black powder as required by the army but in the early twentieth century the filling was changed to slow burning smokeless powder.
Although the gun was introduced in 1873 but it served successfully in WWI and its service ended in WWII as a police weapon for the French gendarmerie and police, the last guns were not retired from the colonial forces until the 1950s, a truly respectable period of service.
