A DDS (Dry Deck Shelter, translates as Dry Deck Shelter, or, Dry Deck Shelter) is an add-on module to a submarine (airlock) that allows divers to enter and exit while the submarine is submerged. The submarine must be adapted to the use of the DDS - it must have a transition opening built between the hull and the module, with the wiring, HVAC and appropriate piping to carry out the flooding of the module and the backwashing of the water.

In the example, the entry and exit of divers from the submarine is possible even without the above equipment (apart from the exit through the torpedo launcher) - but this assumes that the submarine has already been designed for the above tasks and the relevant equipment (transition chamber, hyperbaric chamber, hangar) is integrated in the hull during its construction, which, especially in the case of "high-volume" production of submarines, represents a significant cost with little usability. When a module is used, only the appropriate "connector" (transition hole with cable and pipe outlets) is made, on which, if necessary, an additional module is installed, which can be produced in several copies and can be transported to the place of use, e.g. by air, in a short time and then, within 3 days, can be installed on the intended submarine.

The US Navy probably has 6 DDS modules available. The weight of the module is about 30 tonnes, its length is 11.1 m and its diameter is 2.7 m. The module contains 3 sections - its own airlock, a hyperbaric chamber and a small hangar for material and divers (or other personnel). The module is also usable for covert repairs of a SEAL landing party using rubber dinghies - in that case it allows for the covert transport of up to 20 SEALs with 4 dinghies and their disembarkation (and embarkation) on the surface in a designated area.

The first DDS module (DDS-01S - "S" - starboard opening outer door) was inducted into service in 1982. Its manufacturer was General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp.. The other 5 modules (DDS-02P-DDS-06P, "P" - port opening, port side entry) were commissioned in 1987-1991 and manufactured by Newport News Shipbuilding. The service life of the module is provisionally set at 40 years.
