Chairman of the Supreme Military Council Lieutenant General Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo
(Chairman of the Supreme Military Council)
*March 21, 1937 Akropong - June 16, 1979 (executed)
in power 1978-1979
Due to the short reign of "Fred" Akuffo, not much has survived about his life either. Apparently he graduated from secondary school and then enlisted in the Ghanaian army in 1957. By 1975, he was already one of the leaders of the Supreme Military Council and in June 1978, he deposed Ignatius Kutu Acheamphongo in a palace coup. But Akuffo's government was unable to tackle rampant corruption and clientelism and was overthrown in a military coup Jerry John Rawlings.
Akuffo himself was charged with corruption and human rights abuses and sentenced to death, which, as with Afrifa and Acheamphongo, was carried out at a military firing range on the beach by firing squad.
