The beginning of the thirties of the last century adopted by the Red army and navy in the arsenal of anti-aircraft čtyřkulomet with the designation: Sčjetvjerjonnaja zjenitnaja ustanovka obrazca 1931 g. (SZU fig. 1931 g., some of the materials used abbreviation: ZPU M-4) in an attempt to strengthen the defense of the land and sea units. The gun was fitted on almost all drive, for example: trucks, trailers, railway wagons, ships.
Čyřkulomet was first used in 1938 during the fighting at lake Khasan. In 1939 followed the deployment in battles on the river Khalkhyn Gol. For further use occurred in the soviet-Finnish war and in the DSV.
In early 1943, the soviet army found out, that these machine guns are already not fit to the anti-aircraft defense. To its complete elimination, however, occurred and was still being used to defend the train and the station.
In the soviet navy was the ZPU M4 used on ships and boats river and lake fleets. Outside defense against aircraft was used to support forward deployed and combat exposed infantry and lightly armored vehicles.

Notes

Outside the gate the water-cooled čtyřkulometů, had the soviet army in the armor and two and tříkulometné version with a water and air cooling.
