817th Squadron RAN

Deployed : HMAS Albatross, Nowra, Australia

Deployed : airborne helicopters to HMAS Success and HMAS Tobruk

Destination : naval air support, civilian assistance

Composition : I/817 - 7 Westland Sea King Mk 50A

Historie :

The squadron switched to Sea King helicopters in 1975 from Wessex machines. Originally they had 10 of them, but within the first 5 years 5 were taken out of service due to technical faults and the squadron received only 2 new ones with more cabin space as replacements in 1980.

Since 1992 the squadron has provided direct air support from the HMAS Success tanker, which has a specially adapted hangar for this purpose, including the provision and training of ground technical staff. It regularly operates in South East Asia from aboard HMAS Success.

When operational deployment is required, 1-2 squadron helicopters are deployed on the HMAS Tobruk landing ship. From its deck, 817 Squadron aircraft operated, for example, during Operation SOLANCE in Somalia (1993) or during the East Timor Crisis.

Frequent operational deployments have also been to assist in major natural disasters - for example, the Nyngan (New South Wales) floods in 1991 or the large-scale fires of 1994, where the squadron was temporarily equipped with aircraft for firefighting.
