SAURER Räder-Raupen RR-6
SAURER Räder-Raupen RR-7

This type was originally a project of the Saurer wheeled tracked artillery tractor in response to the requirements of the Austrian army. It was to be a 2 ton vehicle, with an additional 2 tons to be towed. The wheel-and-tracks chassis design was able to use different types of drives in combination for different types of terrain. On the road the vehicle moved on wheels and if the vehicle was to move off-road the wheel section was tipped up and the machine sat on tracks. This combined chassis, while interesting, was too complicated and expensive to manufacture and operate.

One prototype was completed on November 11, 1935 and subsequently underwent tests. Subsequently, the project was redesigned and led to its serial successor.

Saurer RR-7
The production form of this wheeled and tracked vehicle was intended to serve as a towing vehicle (artillery tractor), a truck, and a platform for a combat vehicle. The cargo version of this vehicle had a conventional closed driver's cab and a canvas-covered hull.
On 1/1937 trials began and after their successful completion this type was approved by the Austrian Army and on 19/2/1938 a contract for 160 tractor units was signed. The vehicle was renamed M36 gg 2/2t ZgWg. Subsequently, the possibility of using this design in the German Army in the form of a light reconnaissance vehicle, an artillery reconnaissance vehicle or a service vehicle was discussed. The completed RR 7 platform was shipped to Daimler-Benz Werk 40 in Berlin-Marienfelde on 11 June 1938. Two more chassis were sent to Daimler-Benz for body assembly and three more chassis to Kummersdorf for driving tests. In 10/1938, Saurer reported a quintet of these platforms with the provisional superstructure fitted.

The machine was accepted by the German Ordnance Office (Heereswaffenamt) and 140 units (Gep.Art.Beob.Kw. auf RR 7 Fgst.) were ordered from Saurer. The vehicle was thus to be built as an armoured fighting vehicle intended for artillery reconnaissance. This vehicle is designated the same as the Saurer RK-7, later Sd.Kfz. 254.
