TYPE 58 - a double-barrelled machine gun of 14.5 mm calibre designed for the direct defence of troops against low-flying targets. A Chinese copy of the Soviet-made ZPU-2 double-barrelled machine gun.
Type 58 (2x14.5 mm) was successfully used during the Vietnam War. The double-barreled 14.5 mm machine gun is mounted on a two-wheeled single-axle chassis, with the machine gun lowered to the ground when firing. The weapon uses a 64.4 g projectile (BS-41) with a muzzle velocity of about 1000 m/s with which it is capable of shooting through 32 mm steel armour.
Prior to 1980, a large number of these weapons were in the PLA's arsenal, but they were gradually withdrawn from active service and are now only in the arsenal of paramilitary militias.
