T-55A

Soviet T-55A medium tank produced under Czechoslovak license.

The conversion of the Soviet license documentation to Czechoslovak production conditions was carried out between 1965 and 1966. Production at the ZTS Martin plant took place between 1967 and 1982 and totalled 3,820 units.

Differences from the T-55 version:
- Increased protection of the crew from the effect of weapons of mass destruction (the tank is equipped on the inside and partly on the outside with a protective layer improving the protection of the crew from the flow of neutrons - it can thus approach the epicenter of a nuclear explosion by about 200 meters)
- Reinforcement of the main clutch and planetary directional gear
- new belt tensioner design
- Improved engine start-up with compressed air, with the original electric start-up retained as a back-up
- new fluid control of the planetary directional gear
- Improvements to the underwater tank travel device
- installation of a new G-6.5 dynamo
- new R-124 tank-caller and radio R-123
- the absence of a fixed 7.62 mm machine gun in the front of the hull

During the production of the T-55A tank, its armament was changed. PL machine gun vz.38/46 was mounted on the tower. The machine gun can also be used against ground targets. The machine gun was mounted on one tank in the platoon.

Instead of the original charger hatch on the right side of the tower, a rotating turret was installed, in which the machine gun is mounted.
Lafeta allows location:
- freight,
- marching,
- Combat.
Turret allows:
- 360 ° measurement,
- elevation + 77 °,
- depression - 5 °.

The function of the gunner from the pl machine gun was held by the tank cannon charger.

Main technical data:
Height of tank with machine gun: 2820 mm
Height of the tank with a machine gun in the fighting position: 3990 mm

Weight of carriage with machine gun: 82 kg
Weight of the machine gun itself: 34 kg.

Tank T-55A with 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun DŠK vz.38/46.

The following changes are made against the T-55 tank:
- in the ceiling of the tower, instead of the charger cover, there is a turret with a cover, on which a modernized carriage with 12.7 mm PLG DŠK is attached. Equipping the tank with this machine gun increases the tank's defenses and crew defenses against aircraft and helicopters, thus extending its life.
The machine gun shoots a charger, which stands on its seat when shooting.

Changes in tank design

Battle area
In the combat area, two handles are welded on the right side of the engine bulkhead, to which a bag with equipment for PLG DŠK vz.38/46 is attached to the belt.

Korba
On the left fender at the very front in front of the box with the equipment, the handles for fixing 2 spare belt links are removed. On the right fender in front of the fuel tank, the handles for attaching 2 spare belt links are also removed. Spare parts are located in other places of the tank hull.

Tower
At the back of the tower are welded brackets for storing machine guns. On the right side of the tower are welded holders for attaching 6 hanging boxes to ammunition belts for PLG DŠK - a total of 300 ammunition.

In 1991 was from Czechoslovakia to Sri Lanka delivered 25 tanks T-55A (+ 2 VT-55A ?). This was the first ever tank technique used by the sri lankan army. In October of the same year, therefore, arrived at a group of czechoslovak instructors, that laid the foundations of the newly built sri lanka tank troops. The tanks have been operationally deployed in a local civil war continued between the years 1983 to 2009. One of the T-55A was captured by the Tamil tigers, when in 1993 they attacked a government base in Poonarynu. The Tank was subsequently used to shelling by the sri lankan naval vessels sailing around the northern part of the island.

After the initial delivery of the T-55A is also in the upcoming period enjoyed the favor of the sri lankan army tank surplus from the CZECH army, so the island should be in the course of other years, supplied this technique:

In the summer of 2008, a territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over the area of the medieval temple of Preah Vihear escalated into a series of armed clashes between the armed forces of both countries. As a result, Cambodia began to purchase decommissioned military equipment from Eastern European countries. Thus, on Monday 20 September 2010, a cargo ship carrying T-55A tanks from Serbia and BTR-60PB armoured personnel carriers from Bulgaria arrived at the Cambodian port of Preah Sihanouk. Cambodia purchased a total of 60 (according to other sources 50) T-55A tanks, some of which were manufactured in Czechoslovakia. The territorial dispute escalated in February, April and May 2011, when fighting between Thai and Cambodian infantry, supported on both sides by guns and rocket launchers, flared up in the disputed territory. Both armies also sent their tank equipment to the area. In the case of the Royal Cambodian Army, these were newly delivered T-55A machines. The situation was eventually calmed by a ceasefire, so there were no tank clashes between the two armies.

Diskuse

In the last picture,it is a mine digger, which in the tank tracks removed mines in such a way that it pushed them to the side.In front between the ploughshares it had an apron, which led to the detonation of mines, which had sensors and would explode under the tank.Otherwise the tank was pulling a trailer behind it,in which there were about 6 or 9 drums on which the detonating hoses were wound (I have forgotten the name after all these years). After leaving the minefield by means of the device at the tank commander, the latter carried out the detonation of these mines. If anyone has the manual for this device,I would be happy to repeat it again.Personally,in the 6 years I commanded a tank company,we used this only once.If anyone has further details I would be glad to learn

But if I'm not mistaken, the ROD was not used in tank divisions, but only in motorized divisions and worked on a completely different system than the Explosive Ordnance Disposal.Otherwise I forgot to add that in the tpr(tank battalion)there were two of these RODs,and the third company used the so called TRAL for mine clearance, which were two large and very heavy cylinders (it was several heavy steel wheels that formed a cylinder) that pushed the tank in front of them,in the places where the tank tracks went.According to what I still remember,it was said that these TRALs could withstand a maximum of about 6-8 anti-tank mines

Citace - Miroslav Hlavatý :

In the 12,7 mm pl machine gun DŠK was used to shoot Sa vz.58.

Source : Lidová armija 1982, No. 10

The claim (albeit quoted from the source) about "shooting" is somewhat misleading given the different ballistic properties of the two weapons and their ammunition.

It is a training device (de facto a modified "universal stand"), allowing tank loaders to train in aiming and firing the anti-aircraft machine gun at low-flying and ground targets by "switching" and at reduced ranges within the so-called anti-aircraft polygons of garrison firing ranges and tank shooting ranges.
A (scaled down) mock-up of an aircraft, suspended and moving on a steel cable, carried on poles/structures with pulleys, was used as a target.
The polygon allowed training in firing at a target on approach, on departure, flying laterally and obliquely or at a target in the hover or on the ground.

I would like to ask you about the armour above the engine (position 14 in the picture by Mr. Hlavate). Was it put down during normal maintenance or only during major repairs at the workshop. And does anyone have a photo of the open engine compartment?
Thank you
