After the introduction of new medium and heavy tanks, a huge problem arose with their towing. For a broken or damaged Panther or Tiger up to three of the heaviest semi-tracked tractors in the 18-ton weight category had to be hitched Sd.Kfz.9. However, towing was quite difficult and problematic. However, because the machines were not armored and suffered large losses when towing and rescuing damaged tanks directly from the battlefield, and at the same time it was a problem to get three or more of these half-belts. Therefore, it was necessary to create an armored machine of such a mass category that could tow new heavy combat machines.
However, the Bergepanther was not the first design of a heavy armored rescue vehicle. The first was the idea of conversion of planned prototypes of the Tiger heavy tank predecessor VK 36.01 (H). The planned bergepanzer bore the designation Schweres Abschleppfahrzeug V.Kz. 35.01. Since this attempt did not work, the choice fell on the modification of the tank Panther.

The first series 12 machines on the chassis Panther Ausf.D, which was made in factory MAN (2 pcs in 5/1943 and 10 pcs in 6/1943) differed from full-fledged Panthers only by removing the turret, adjusting the floor in the combat area and covering the opening with a low circular superstructure with a hinged hatch. These machines were deployed to units fighting in the battle of Kursk. Panzer-Abteilung 51 and Panzer-Abteilung 52 had a pair of Bergepanthers. After one machine, they were also in units armed with heavy tank fighters Ferdinand ( schwere Panzerjäger- Department 653 a schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654).

Second series 70 pcs of Bergepantherov was made in the company Henschel & Sohn.
The first 30 Bergepanthers were created in the period 7-8/1943 by conversion of standard Panther Ausf.D. These had the same circular superstructure as the first 12-piece series of Bergepanthers. A wooden prism was attached to the right ceiling of the body. A towing device was mounted on the rear body armor in its lower part. Approximately in the middle of the side armor of the body in its upper part was placed an additional suspension for the tow rope. It is interesting that probably from the time of production these machines had castors of the outer wheel row with 24 connecting bolts (8 groups of 3 bolts), the inner pair of castors were with 16 connecting bolts.
The remaining 40 machines were made of new hulls specially designed for the Bergepanther (delivered from 10/1943), when the opening along the orbit of the tower in the ceiling of the hull was replaced by a longitudinal cutout, which extended to the space above the crew. Behind the driver's and radioperator's seats, a pair of seats were mounted for a pair of other crew members. These sat with their backs to each other. In the case of these "bergewanne", a ceiling rail was mounted behind the driver's seat and the radio operator/machine gunner's shooter and this double seat. Square sides (Ladebrücke) were mounted above the space where the winch was supposed to be. The hulls had pre-prepared mounting brackets for the crane, support blade, winch (construction with guide rollers was mounted) and a 2 cm cannon was to be mounted, but these components and the cannon (the carriage was mounted) were not supplied. Platforms using special bodies designed for Bergepanther had eliminated storage boxes for material mounted on the sides of the rear body armor, on the left side armor were mounted handles for the jack, the belt carrier was shortened and the central auxiliary holder for the tow rope was mounted in a lower position. Due to the fact that the battle area was open, the installation of a ventilation fan on the ceiling of the battle area in front of the driver and the radio operator was eliminated.Simple log footrests were welded to the front armor of the hull.
2 cm cannon Kw.K.38 was probably used only on the model prototype Fgst.Nr.212161 made in 9/1943 by company Henschel, which was subsequently delivered to the company MAN, which was responsible for the development of Bergepanthera. She created this model piece, which had full equipment, including a 40-ton winch, support blade and cannon Kw.K.38 with protective shield. This version bore the official designation Bergepanther Ausf.A (used as the basis of the hull Panther Ausf.A).

The third series 40 pieces of Bergepanthers were produced by the company Daimler-Benz in the factory in Berlin-Marienfeld (3-4/1944). The original order was for 163 Bergepanthers, which was later reduced to 55 machines and finally to 40 rescue tanks produced. The remaining machines from the original order were to be manufactured by Demag.
The original towing device was eliminated and replaced by a towing device mounted on the hatch to access the engine on the rear body armor. The wooden prism for emergency rescue has been moved to the left. The crane components were attached to the right side and rear of the superstructure. Mount armor holders Fliegerbeschussgerät 34 for machine guns MG 34, which were intended for anti-aircraft, were welded to the armor covers of the side observation periscopes of the driver and the radio operator defense. The exposed crew compartment was protected by a folding structure with a waterproof canvas. The tanks were fitted with newer tool holders on the sides of the hull, and the drawbars had a pair of support guides welded over the edge of the engine cover. The engine starting crank was extended by 350 mm. The wheels were a later version with 24 connecting screws.

The final company that Bergepanthery was to produce became the company Demag, which received an order for 123 pieces of Bergepanthery Ausf.A (Fgst.Nr. 175541-175663). The first machines were delivered in 3/1944 from a factory in the Benrath district in Düsseldorf, later machines came from a factory in Falkensee near Berlin.
In 3/1944, the application of the antimagnetic layer of zimmerite was started.
In 5/1944, the first serial Bergepanther with a 40-ton reel was produced.
In 8/1944, the installation of a mount for a 2 cm cannon was canceled.
In 9/1944, the application of zimmerite was canceled.
The company Demag received another order for 74 pieces Bergepanther Ausf.G. The first such machine was delivered by the company in 10/1944 and deliveries continued until the end of the war. Bergepanther was given the assembly of three brackets (Pilze) for a 2-ton crane (Behelfskran). Many of the modifications that accompanied the production of standard Panther tanks were introduced with delay to the Bergepanthers. E.g. the self-cleaning tensioning wheel introduced in 10/1944 did not appear until mid-11/1944. Exhaust flame arresters (Flammenvernichter) introduced in 12/1944 did not appear on the Bergepatheres until early 1945.

The last company to supply Bergepanthery was B. Seibert - Stahlbau GmbH. However, it did not produce new rescue machines, but converted old and damaged classic Panther tanks. During the war, the company was engaged, for example, in the production of some sections of submarines. The company modified the damaged Panther tanks that came from the battlefields into rescue machines at the Aschaffenburg branch. Panzer Reparatur-Werkstadt was housed in a pair of large halls and was originally engaged in repairs Pz.Kpfw.III, but priority was given to repairing Panthers. The company won a contract for the conversion of Panther's Ausf.D to Bergepanther (Umbau). The first deliveries began in 6/1944. There are records of 61 delivered machines without any more detailed records of monthly deliveries. After the occupation of the factory in 3/1945, which was destroyed on February 25, 1945 by an Allied air raid, seven Bergepanthers (Umbau) were found ready to be sent to the units. Another 12 bodies of Panther Ausf.D and Bergepanther (Umbau) were found on the repair line, 10 more bodies were found around the factory plus 23 destroyed Panther tanks. There were also 150 towers made of Panther tanks in the area, which testified to an extensive program of repairs and conversions. The company refurbished and modified the removed turrets from Panther tanks and supplied a 7.5 cm Panthertürme II for installation in permanent firing positions with concrete and wooden bases.
The cover above the driver's and radio operator's area was removed from the tanks. At the same time, the fan on the ceiling in front of the driver and radio operator positions was removed and the opening after it was covered with a cover. The latest suspension components, wheels and belts have been fitted. All necessary parts that had to be replaced as part of repairs were modified to the then standard. The engine inlet cover on the rear body armor was replaced with a modified cover with a towing device mounted. The opening after the tower was covered with the same construction as the first Bergepanthers in 1943 supplied by M.A.N. Holders of Fliegerbeschussgerät 34 machine gun mounts for machine guns MG 34 were welded to the periscope covers. Support guides for drawbars were installed, new tool holders, a wooden prism was mounted on the left side of the brackets, and brackets for transporting a 2-ton folding crane were mounted on the right side.
Around 9/1944, the installation of pressure pads in the nose of the front armor was canceled and storage boxes for material mounted on the sides of the rear body armor were eliminated.

An interesting feature of these vehicles was a 40-ton winch, which was taken without significant changes from experimental amphibious engineer vehicles from 1940.

Of interest is the mention of the future version Bergepanther Ausf.F (Gerät Nr.549) in the list of devices D97/1 + (Geräteliste).
Equally interesting is the use of Bergepantherov in the post-war Czechoslovak army and armies of other countries .

A curious shot of the Bergepanther, which bears the hallmarks of a version produced by Henschel (one of the first 30 pieces made of Panther Ausf.D in the period 7-8/1943), but it has mounted a ceiling armor with hatches above the space of the driver and operator, a wooden prism on the right side, a support hook for the tow rope on the left side of the superstructure. It has a long carrier for spare belt links, no support guides for the drawbars. He has applied zimmerite, which he should not have due to the date of production, but he could get it in a field repair shop (it looks like it was applied by field units). An absolute rarity, however, is the attachment mounted on the rear body of the body, which was used to support the external fuel tank (Zusatz-Kraftstoffbehaelter). A sketch of a similar device can be found in Spielberger's book Panther & It´s Variants (p.17).

The cannon is unoriginal, it only had a model prototype.

The vehicle has a pair of support guides welded on the edge of the rear armor, a guide pulley for the tow rope and in the lower part of the rear armor it has handles for the support blade. Instead of the originally fitted towing device, it has a newer type of towing device that was on the engine access covers. The vehicle has a shortened spare belt link holder.
