CARRO DE COMBATE MEDIO NAHUEL D.L.43
NAHUEL model Baisi 1943

Argentina was one of the few industrially developed countries before World War II, where heavy industry was not able to produce any complex tank designs. Thus, the armour of the Argentine army consisted of machines purchased abroad. At the outbreak of World War II, the Argentine army had a desire to purchase modern tank armament. They were interested in tanks from England, France, Italy and Czechoslovak export versions LT-38. However, in anticipation of war, the countries mentioned were rapidly arming and export supplies abroad were out of the question. For similar reasons, trade with Czechoslovak companies was also not possible, because at the time of their interest (1940) Czechoslovak weapons were already produced only for the Wehrmacht.
Moreover, Argentinawas seen as a fascist-sympathizing country, and another potential tank supplier, the USA, in an attempt to prevent the war from being transferred to the South American continent, essentially imposed an arms embargo on Argentinain an attempt to prevent the war from spreading to the South American continent.

Therefore, the very idea of creating, practically without any major experience, a modern medium tank was born. In 1942, the General Administration of Armaments Production was established, with the help of which the development and production of the Argentine tank was to be coordinated. In 1943, the project was approved and its management was entrusted to Col. Alfredo Aquiles BAISI. This gentleman was one of the most important figures in Argentine military history and is referred to as the father of the Argentine tank force. [Baisi was able to lead the project work and at the same time was able to organize the cooperation of all Argentine military forces and a number of subcontracting companies.

The project itself is inspired in shape and concept by the American medium tank M4 Sherman, but that is where the similarities end and the designers went their own way. Work proceeded at an admirably fast pace. In 45 days a wooden mock-up of the tank was built in M 1:1 and in two months the 1st prototype was made. The design was given the fighting name NAHUEL, which means tiger in the language of the Aracaun Indians living in the southern part of Argentina. The fuselage was made of armour plates joined by welding and the turret was cast (casting made problems, but they eventually mastered the technology successfully).
The first prototype was still being tested without a turret. The machine passed the tests very well. The machine was presented to the public on 4.6.1944 during the celebrations of the revolution of 1943. At the parade on 9.6.1944, 10 Nahuels walked down the Avenida del Libertador in Buenos Aires. A total of 16 examples were produced at the Arsenal Esteban de Lucafactory in Buenos Aires in 1943/44. Production did not continue as the attitude of the USA and the Allies changed and Argentina bought the tanks cheaply from its army surplus. As late as 1950 there were still 13 machines in service; the last one was retired from service in 1962. Some machines were scrapped, some ended up as practice targets on firing ranges. No Nahuel have survived.
