The history of this remarkable and unknown vehicle began to be written in the second half of World War 2. This design was developed as a replacement for the Landwasserschlepper LWS. The development of this vehicle was initiated by the Waffen SS, more specifically the Technical Academy of the SS and Police in [iaa]Berlin. Behind the promotion of this project was the commander of this academy SS Brigadeführer Major General Prof. Ing. Gerloff, who also received the support of the Wehrmacht(General Staff of the OKW - Gen. Jodland Heereswaffenamt WaPrüf 5- the Engineer and Railway Department) as well as Speer's Reich Ministry of Industry. This ensured that the project would have financial, personnel and material backing. The development contract was awarded to the company Škoda, which assigned it to the branch in Plzeň (automotive department 83, project designation A 1-33). The name of the project was chaotic and inconsistent - it changed throughout the development. It was most often referred to as schweres Gleiskettenfahrzeug Škoda LR30 (schwimmfährig)". The Waffen SS liaison staff operating at the Skoda General Headquarters in Prague used the designation Land-Wasser-Frachter Skoda LR 30. The Czech internal designation was floating tracked tank, after the war it figured in the reporting for the restored MNO in Prague as heavy tracked and transport LR30 for driving on land and in water. The project constantly struggled with material shortages and regulations to use as many parts as possible from established production of other machines. This was to ensure that production and maintenance was unified, smooth and economical. The Heereswaffenamt insisted mainly on taking over the engine, gearbox and belts. However, Skoda refused, arguing that without new design elements it was impossible to achieve the desired result. Skoda's arguments were accepted, but not permanently. Development was halted in the first quarter of 1944. The reasons are nowhere given; the company itself stated after the war that the order was not carried out due to lack of material.
The design of the vehicle was interesting. The machine had two engines in the rear. The main one with 450 hp (12-cylinder spark-ignition, cylinders arranged in a V at a cylinder angle of 60°, double off-road carburetor with starter). A secondary engine of 50 hp (4-cylinder petrol) was located on the left side of the main engine and was used to drive the fan, pumps and to start the main engine. The propulsion concept and chassis resembled the Gravel tank project T-25, but was not identical. The drive wheel was at the front and the chassis had ten twin 550 mm diameter running wheels. They were mounted on swinging arms and the suspension was torsion bars. The vehicle, which was by specification a heavy transport and supply machine (up to 30 tons) was seaworthy. To do this, however, it had to have two dimensional floats made of light metal mounted on the sides. They were to be able to be lifted up against the side walls of the vehicle when travelling on land, or to be towed behind the vehicle on a two-wheeled sidecar. Two propellers D=600 mm with a maximum speed of 1000 rpm were to ensure the machine's flotation. The machine was not armoured and had no armament (except for the crew's personal armament). Official documentation on the exact designation of the machine is missing. The machines were probably intended to serve primarily as supply machines in the difficult terrain on the Eastern Front, where they were to supplement the new RSO, Maultier, etc. machines. This is evidenced by the high payload capacity, the dimensions of the cargo hold (4.4 x 2.9 x 1.9 m), the large opening for top loading (4.0 x 1.5 m). The machine was to have tracks 700 mm wide (LWS had only 310 mm). The project was finally terminated by the Allied air raid on Plzeň in 4/1945, when all the base materials and the wooden mock-ups of the 1:10 scale machine were burned.
