History of HMS Formidable (R.67)



HMS Formidable was built at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland, her keel was laid on 17 June 1937, she was launched on 17 August 1939 and commissioned on 24 November 1940. Scrapped 1956.

In 1935, the Navy Department made a radical decision that would give the next generation of aircraft carriers the same protection as large battleships. Previous ships had been armored, but inadequately or only on the main deck, engine room spaces, and below the waterline. Ships of the Illustrious class were to have a hangar protected against 500 pound bombs (6 inches thick armor), this meant armored takeoff decks and extending vertical armor up to the deck. The takeoff deck between the elevators and the hangar walls had 3 inches thick armor, the side armor was 4 inches thick. Over 5,000 tons of extra armour had to be incorporated into the contract limit of 23,000 tons, consequently they were considerably shorter than the Ark Royal, and because the flight deck armour weighed 1,500 tons, the second hangar deck was vertically moved 22 feet to maintain stability.

During her career, HMS Formidable operated mainly in the Mediterranean, where she suffered damage that put her out of action for a time. Her first assignment was to escort a convoy to Capetown from December 1940 to January 1941. She was subsequently sent around the Mediterranean to relieve HMS Illustrious in February 1941. She participated in the Battle of Matapan 27-29 March 1941, and in the two following months was involved in convoy protection. She supported the Cretan operation in May, where she suffered serious damage from aerial 1000 kg bombs on 26 May 1941. She was off duty for six months. From June to December 1941 she underwent repairs in the USA. She then operated in the Indian Ocean from March to August 1942. She returned to the Mediterranean in October 1942 and remained at the base until October 1943, when she participated in the North African landings in November 1942, the Sicilian landings in July 1943, and the landings at Salerno in September 1943. The last action she participated in on her Mediterranean anabasis was the Arctic Convoy in October 1943.

HMS Formidable was last refitted between January and June 1944. After that, her aircraft were involved in Operation "Mascot"-an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in Norway on 17 July 1944. She took part in further attacks on Tirpitz on 22, 24 and 29 August 1944 as part of Operation "Goodwood".

HMS Formidable sailed to the Far East from 16 September 1944, but was stationed at Gibraltar from September 1944 to January 1945 after machinery failed. She eventually joined the British Pacific Fleet instead of HMS Illustrious (16 April 1945). She subsequently participated in air strikes against the Sakishima Islands (part of the Ryukyu / Okinawa archipelago) between April and May 1945. She was hit by kamikaze attacks between 4 and 9 May 1945, but was still able to operate for several hours. Her aircraft later participated in air strikes against the Japanese home islands between July and August 1945.

HMS Formidable arrived in Sydney, Australia on 23 August 1945. AFTER returning to the United Kingdom, she was placed in reserve in March 1947, only to be subsequently decommissioned three years later and sold in 1953. Her final demise came in November 1956 when she was scrapped.
