10,5 cm le.F.H.18/6 (Sf.) auf GW III/IV "Heuschrecke IVb"

Roughly one year after the inception of the project 10.5cm leFH 18/1(Sf) auf Geschützwagen IVb (Sd.Kfz.165/1) in 5/1943, a new unorthodox self-propelled howitzer project using a modified GW III/IV chassis (a mix of Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV used in the Nashorn tank fighter and Hummel self-propelled howitzer).
In 6/1943, the Grussonwerk chassis Fgst.Nr. 302148 was delivered to the Hummel factory to be used for the production of the Hummel self-propelled howitzer. It was just a chassis without a superstructure.
What was unorthodox was the weapon's lafetation. The latter was placed in a pivoting turret, which allowed fire to be conducted without the need to rotate the whole vehicle and which could be taken off the vehicle and placed in a ready permanent firing position. A simple frame structure was used for the sensing. The chassis could then serve as an ammunition vehicle, or it could be fitted with an additional turret and this could be carried to the next firing position. The machine could be fitted with a turret and the second turret could be carried on a trailer. With the help of the frame construction, it could also serve as a recovery vehicle under certain conditions. The advantage of such a construction was the possibility of quickly building field firing positions.
On 28.10.1943, it was WaPrüf 4 (artillery department) decided to modify/modernize the main weapon of the light howitzer leFH 18 using components from StuH 42 as well. The prototype was completed by 11 October 1943 and the machine subsequently underwent test runs at Hillersleben. At the same time, the folding of the turret using hydraulic equipment was also tested. At the end of 12/1943 it was decided to redesign the turret in order to reduce weight and simplify production. The rebuilt prototype was presented to representatives of WaPrüf 4 on 28/3/1944. Subsequently, requests for further modifications were submitted. The howitzer was to be folded also with the help of a manually operated crane, the machine was to carry wheels on which the howitzer could be transported. Modifications were also made to the howitzer itself (the standard brake gear and the leFH 18/40 shell were to be used). The modified prototype was demonstrated again on 31.5.1944. After two years of development of the Heuschrecke, it became clear that the complex design had no use in the German army. Practical test experience also revealed the problematic folding of the 3.8 t turret. Therefore, the project was stopped and serial production of this machine was not started.
The original plans were for this machine to replace the Wespe self-propelled howitzer in production from 5/1944.

Similar projects were also developed by 10.5cm leFH 18/40/2 (Sf) auf GW III/IV and 10.5cm leFH43 auf Selbstfahrlafette Škoda T-25. A similar project was also created on a medium tank chassis Panther.

The prototype is preserved to this day in the American Museum Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, USA.
