Mansyū Ki-98
キ 98 作 作 战斗 袭击 机

History and development:

Given the fact that the prototype was produced in the factory in Charbin, the war was over, the local factory in 1944 was heavily bombed and moreover, there was later the Red Army, so it is no wonder that not much information about this type. It is certain that at the end of the war, however, it was not yet completed, the wing was not attached to the fuselage and the fuselage itself was not completed. All power data are calculated and also span data can be obtained in three different values + - 500 mm. This was probably due to the fact that the Mansyu Ki-98 was originally intended to be a fighter jet, and later its designation was changed to a high-altitude fighter.

Work on the war machine project began in 1943, the aircraft was designed as a two-hull with a medium gondola, which was to ensure easy installation of the large-caliber cannon Ho-201, later Ho-203 a Ho -204 caliber 37 mm and two cannons Ho-5 caliber 20 mm. At the end of the fuselage nacelle was an engine driving a thruster. The largest diameter of the central hull nacelle was 1,450 mm. The engine was originally to be a Mitsubishi Ha-211-III with forced cooling, which was provided by a fan, later the engine was changed to Ha-211-Ru, which was to provide performance at higher altitudes. The cockpit was to be pressurized with the original entrance and exit, which was possible by the landing gear shaft behind the front wheel, an emergency exit would probably be a very dangerous and groundbreaking piece. The aircraft was blown in 1944 in the wind tunnel in Rikugun Kokugijutsu Kenkyusho, and this year the designation was also changed to a high-altitude fighter. The contemporaries of this aircraft were to be Tachikawa Ki-94 and naval Mitsubishi J4M Senden.

The Manshu Ki-98 high altitude fighter was all-metal and had an interesting design, but unfortunately it was never completed, it remained in the prototype stage, which is a pity because a comparison with Allied fighters would have been interesting.
Work on the Ki-98 project began in 1943 as mentioned by the author above, at the Manshu factory in Charbin, the project called Shisaku Kokodo Sentoki actually ( high altitude fighter aircraft ) was completed in October 1944. A wooden mock-up of the fuselage was also built at that time. It was planned that, despite the delays, the first prototype Ki-98 would be completed sometime between the fall and summer of 1945. However, further delays were caused by the raid on the Charbin production facility by American B-29 bombers on December 7, 1944. By early August 1945, just before the end of the war, only the airframes were actually completed and the fuselage was being assembled. After the start of the Soviet offensive in Manchuria, sometime in early August 1945, all production plans for the aircraft and the already built parts of the aircraft, along with the components, were burned by the factory employees to prevent them from falling into enemy hands.

Also of interest, as mentioned by the author of the article above, is the ascent and entry of this aircraft. And especially its emergency exit. During the emergency exit, the pilot had to first extend the landing gear, and only then with a parachute to climb through the undercarriage shaft of the front wheel. This method seemed to be very complicated and impractical, and perhaps that is why another method of emergency exit was later considered (allegedly after dropping part of the cabin cover).
