CZK - Škoda-Sentinel

licenční parní automobil
Following the establishment of a new automotive department in the Škoda plant in Pilsen and the search for a replacement production program for existing military production, the company's management purchased licenses for the production of the French passenger car Hispano-Suiza and steam trucks from The Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd. , Shrewsbury, England. Part of the purchased English license from 1923 was also the gradual delivery of the following cars, which was preceded by several cars ordered by the Ministry of National Defense for Prague.

The steam engine had a number of indisputable advantages over petrol at the time. It was flexible, achieved immediate acceleration, and easily overcame considerable climbs with easy operation with a single shut-off valve. It also allowed the car to stop immediately by simply closing it, as the engine then worked as a compressor and braked. Another advantage was the lower oil consumption (then it was replenished daily in cars) and also the low speed (300) played another important economic role with less component wear. However, the disadvantage of the steam wagon proved to be a disadvantage, as the boiler had to be heated first. Driving Sentinel was required to pass driving, heating and engineering tests ...
This powerful but slow car was available in many versions: as a flatbed, one-way or three-way tipper, stanchion, sprinkler, garbage truck or also as a city omnibus or rail vehicle. Some specimens served long after World War II. World War II and were gradually decommissioned only due to lack of spare parts ...
According to the standards of the time, the Škoda-Sentinel was a car of classic design. It was able to operate in the most difficult conditions, and thanks to the flexible operation of the steam engine, the Sentinel proved itself well in difficult terrain, as evidenced by military tests in 1923 of several vehicles imported for this purpose, in which the Ministry of Railways also participated. The tests then took place on the line Prague - Brandýs n.L.- Mochov - Prague. The results were satisfactory and Škoda's plants, which were looking for production opportunities for their new vehicle department in Pilsen, saw new profitable opportunities there and therefore purchased a license in England.

Technical data of car I. series:

The boiler upright, tubular, with a heating area of 5.06 m square, was placed in front of the frame. It was possible to burn coke, coal, charcoal, wood and briquettes, but the most suitable was coke. The boiler was also equipped with a manometer, a watermark with a safety valve, the steam output was controlled by a slide valve. Preparation for the ride took about 30 minutes.
A steam engine two-cylinder, horizontal, was placed under the frame in front of the rear axle. When drilling a diameter of 170 mm and a stroke of 230 mm, a steam pressure of 19 atp and at 250 rpm gave 70 HP. The crank mechanism was then equipped with a patented differential acting on the chain sprockets. The transmission of power to the fixed rear axle was by massive Gall chains, which powered twin wheels, freely rotating on the axle. The average speed of the car was about 25 km/h. Lubrication of the steam engine and chains was a lubrication device, separate for each side and driven by the crankshaft.
The chassis formed a frame of two longitudinal beams "U" connected by crossbars, riveted and screwed into a rigid lattice girder. In the rear part of the frame there was a tank for 800 liters of water, from which the boiler was powered by an injector. The front and rear axles were complete, suspended by semi-elliptical leaf springs.
The wheels were cast steel, arched, with solid rubber rims. The front single, outer diameter was 900 mm, inner 720 mm and hoop width 180 mm. The rear wheels were doubled with an outer diameter of 1050 mm, an inner diameter of 850 mm and a width of 180 mm. Later, the car was equipped with wheels with tires of the same diameter at the front and rear with solid steel discs. The steering with the bolt and nut was on the right side, the steering wheel.
The brakes, acting only on the rear wheels, were calipers with two pairs of calipers in each wheel. One was then controlled by a pedal, the other by a handwheel. The vehicle could be braked by closing the steam access to the steam engine, which then acted as a compressor. To secure the car on the slope, the so-called mountain strut was used, which lowered onto the road and rebelled against the slope.
The body was a mixed construction of wood and steel. The sheet metal driver's cab was then mounted on an angle frame, the seats and the fuel tank, which could hold up to 300 kg of coal, were made of wood. Some types had part of the booth from the front entrance door and the back wall from the decks. The car booth was not glazed. The body of the flatbed and the tippers were wooden, chained and sheet metal.
The Omnibus had a body made like a railroad car with a side entrance door on the left side, and the driver's cab was enclosed with an arrow leeward shield with glass in wooden frames. Separate acetylene lamps were later replaced by electric headlights and torches.
The 5-ton tonne car with a water supply of 800 liters and 300 kg of coal had a curb weight of 7860 kg and this supply lasted up to 40 km driving at an average speed of 15 km/h. and a maximum of 25 km/h.
Sentinels have thus become welcome helpers, mainly due to the already mentioned low operating costs. In the mid-twenties, a liter of heavy gasoline cost about CZK 3.40/kg, while a meter of coal came to a total of CZK 30. With a maximum consumption of 30 liters of water and 4 kg of coal per 1 km, the operation of the sentinel came in half to a third compared to a comparable truck with an internal combustion engine. The price of a Škoda-Sentinel truck with a load capacity of 5 tons in 1925 was CZK 160,000.
