Charleston was nicknamed the "Ladies Gunboat" because the Charleston Ladies' Association contributed heavily to her construction. She was the strongest and best armored ship in the Charleston fleet, but her combat value was diminished by her weak and unreliable steam engine. There is some controversy over the dimensions, according to Osprey the dimensions of the ship were only 57.6 x 10.4 x 4.3 m.
