V roku 1600 začal bojovať pod habsburskou zástavou proti Turkom v Uhorsku. V roku 1620 sa stal vrchným veliteľom ligistickej armády. Rozhodujúcim spôsobom sa podieľal na porážke dánskej armády v prvej etape vojny, za čo bol roku 1630 menovaný generálporučíkem cisárskej armády a tiež katolíckej Ligy. K ďalším skvelým úspechom patrí dobytie Magdeburgu. Osudnou sa mu stala zrážka so švédskou armádou na rieke Lech 5. apríla 1632. V čele svojich vojsk sa snažil nepriateľovi zabrániť v prechode na druhý breh. Pritom ho zasiahla delová guľa do nohy a tomuto zraneniu 30. apríla toho roku v Ingolstadte podľahol.
