On August 24, 1914, Colonel Jean Baptiste Estienne formulated a vision of the all-terrain vehicles that would determine the direction of modern warfare, when he predicted a radical change. Immobile trench warfare was to be transformed by armoured vehicles equipped with weapons that were capable of moving in the terrain.
One of the first attempts to develop a vehicle that would allow troops to more easily negotiate wire obstacles was the design of the Boirault No 1 vehicle by engineer Louis Boirault. Design flaws and further evolutionary developments brought about the construction of the second prototype, the Boirault No 2. The prototype was built at the end of 1915, and testing did not occur until 17 August 1916. ROv like its predecessor, it was a clumsy and underpowered vehicle. Compared to the first prototype, it had a reinforced frame structure and the engine and crew compartment was made of armoured steel. This experiment led nowhere; by the time the prototypes were designed, incomparably more modern battle tank designs were available, which of course were given priority.
