U-172 sailed on its final voyage from Lorient 22. November 1943. Sunk was 13. December west of the Canary islands after 27 hours-long chase involving planes the Grumman TBF Avenger and - Grumman F4F Wildcat (VC-19 Squadron) from the escort aircraft carrier USS Bogue (CVE-9) and american torpedoborců George E. Badger (DD-196), Clemson (DD-186), Osmond Ingram (DD-255) and Du Pont (DD-152). In the hunt for the submarine was overthrown by the more than 200 depth charges and a few acoustic torpedoes MK 24. Thirteen men of the crew were killed, 46 survived.
