12. September 1942 the west african coast between the island of Ascension, and Liberia got torpedoed by the U-156 the british ocean vessel RMS Laconia with 80 civilians, 268 british troops and 1800 Italian prisoners of war, which guarded 160 Polish soldiers.
After the crew of the submarine during the patrol sinking ship heard on the surface of the Italian voices, launched the rescue operation and called for additional sub - 15. September arrived the U-506, U-507 and Italian submarine Camppellini. These four submarines were 16. September - even though that is on their upper decks daly to recognize the hundreds of survivors, they displayed banners with a red cross and dragged behind several rescue boats - attacked by allied bomber B-24 Liberator. One of the bombs landed in the immediate vicinity of the lifeboats with the survivors towed behind U-156, and in a few hundreds of them killed. Another bomb U-156 lightly damaged. The captain was forced to order the unleashing of boats, shipwrecked ordered to jump into the sea and gave the order to dive the U-156 along with U-506 and 507. 17. September arrived at the place of ships of vichy France, in order to save the remaining about 1100 survivors.
As a result of this incident was "the Order of the Laconia" (German Laconia-Befehl), whom the commander of the German submarine fleet admiral Karl Dönitz explicitly to the crews of submarines banned to provide assistance to the shipwrecked from the sunken ships.
