In 1930, the Renault company introduced a heavy tank fighter project, which was intended to support the fortifications of the Maginot Line. The chassis of the vehicle was to be a derivative of the Renault D1 tank chassis. The contract to develop this fighter was cancelled in 1932, but the programme was not cancelled and in 1934 a similar project Garnier-Renault sur chassis D 3 was drawn up, which lived to see at least a prototype form.
