Prior to the invasion of France by Germany in 1940, one tank, Renault D2 serial number 2002, was converted into a prototype flamethrower tank. The tank was stripped of its turret and a box superstructure was fitted in its place - a tank with a 2,000 litre supply of incendiary agent. Test firings were carried out using water, when the range was 100 meters, when using a higher density fuse it was 40-50 meters. The plans envisaged that the Renault D2 of the first production run (50 tanks) were to undergo conversion.
Circumstantial evidence also suggests a similar conversion of a heavier tank B 1 bis.
