AT-T
The development of the Object 401 artillery tractor was started in 1946 under the direction of chief designer M. N. Shchukin. Parts from the medium tank T-54 were widely used in its construction - the tractor took over more or less the entire chassis from this tank.
The tractor was designed for hauling artillery up to 25 tons and possibly transporting its personnel. The maximum speed it was capable of was 35 km/h. In 1947, the first prototype was involved in trials. Two years later, the first 50 examples were introduced into the armament of the Soviet army under the designation AT-T (Aртиллерийский Tягач Tяжеелый). Series production continued until 1979. Its successor was to be the MT-T type.
A number of special superstructures were built on the basis of the AT-T tractor, whether they were engineers' machines or radar carriers. The AT-T was also used by the Strategic Rocket Forces, where it was used to tow the R-5M (complex 8K51) and R-12 (complex 8K63) missiles.
