In 1938, an unarmoured supply vehicle was introduced to the army - the Renault 36R TRC tractor. "TRC" stood for Tracteur de ravitaillement de chars (supply vehicle for tanks). The vehicle was also known by the factory designation ACD 1. It was a derivative of the Renault UE/Renault UE-2 armoured tractor, which used identical chassis components, engine, etc. A conventional driver's cab was fitted at the front, behind which a storage area was created with metal sidewalls. The vehicle was to be used to carry ammunition of 75 mm, 47 mm, or 37 mm calibre up to a total weight of 822 kg. In tow it could tow a trailer (identical to the one towed by Renault UE) with 450 litres of fuel, with cans of oil, water, lubricant up to a total weight of 600 kg. 260 vehicles were ordered, the last were delivered just before France was invaded by Germany in 1940. No further production was considered, preference being given to the larger Lorraine 37L.
