In 1944, there was an effort to create a modern reconnaissance artillery armored vehicle. One of the versions was the modification Sd.Kfz.251/18, but the idea of a perfect vehicle in this category was met by the project Panzerbeobachtungswagen V " Panther ", which was equipped with modern optical instruments and a block instrument Blockstelle 0 (automatic drawing board). The project Panzerbeobachtungswagen In "Panther" was rejected due to the acute need for the production of battle tanks Panther. The company Rheinmetall-Borsig focused on the development of a similarly equipped vehicle using the platform of a half-track armored personnel carrier Sd.Kfz.251. The initial design of the vehicle was submitted in 9/1944. The vehicle was to be equipped with an automatic drawing board Blockstelle 0, an observation periscope T.B.F.2 and a stereoscopic rangefinder Em 1.25m R42.

Blockstelle 0 was the work of Anschütz from Kiel. It was a device in the shape of a box measuring 500x460x305 mm. It was placed on the right side of the driver, from above it was to be protected by 12 mm thick armor. The device was to be powered by the vehicle's electrical system and connected to the front axle wheels by a flexible cable. The device thus sensed the distance traveled. The device had a gyrocompass that maintained the north orientation of the device. The result of the vehicle's movement was a smooth and automatic conversion to the eastern and northern Cartesian coordinates, which were added to the starting position. The device allowed the vehicle to move to a distance of 10 km east or north and was able to determine its geographical location. Blockstelle 0 was suitable for use in terrain for which no maps were available, resp. map, as well as for those for which maps suitable for the use of artillery guidance were not available. With the help of this device, based on the observation of the impact of the shot, it was possible to make a correction of the shooting. (note: This is a lay translation of the text in the source, I do not know this issue)
T.B.F.2 was an observation periscope to be pivotally mounted to the roof of the armored superstructure behind the driver of the vehicle. The optics were to be protected by an armored cover.
E.M. 1.25m R42 a sterooscopic rangefinder was rotatably mounted on a rotating base located approximately in the middle of the combat space of the vehicle. The rangefinder was the work of Nedinsco from the Dutch city of Venlo (a subsidiary of Zeiss). In the original design, the observer was to protect a simple folded armor shield, a modified design from 1/1945 counted using a standard angled shield as used to protect the machine gun operating the front machine gun MG 42 in the standard Sd.Kfz.251/1. After dismantling the rangefinder and storing it in the battle area, the machine gun MG 42 could be mounted and the vehicle received fire support.

The vehicle was to be equipped with similar radio equipment as Sd.Kfz.251/18. It was to consist of radio stations Fu 8, Fu 4 and Funksprechgerät f. The vehicle had a pair of antennas. One rod antenna was mounted on the right side of the superstructure in the front. The second star antenna was mounted in the upper part of the rear right corner of the crew's combat area. The vehicle had retained the rear machine gun holder.
Due to the critical situation of industrial production, despite the completion of the development and the acute need of this machine for the needs of artillery, serial production was canceled. Priority was given to the more urgent production of combat vehicles.

Diskuse

according to the article, it was a plan that was not realized - so the photo will not be
the resemblance would probably be (with reservations) close to Sd.Kfz.251/18

Dear Colleague,
I beg to differ, because there are known photographs from the Bundesarchiv and elsewhere. The vehicles differed in appearance by the hulls used, the additional roof extensions over the driver and the radio stations.
Sd.Kfz.251/18-1 had Fu4, Fu8, Fu Spg.Ger.f (I don't know this type)
Sd.Kfz.251/18-1a had Fu4, Fu8
Sd.Kfz.251/18-2 had Fu5, Fu8
Sd.Kfz.251/18-2a had Fu4, Fu5, Fu8

Guys I don't want to get into it too much, but the table in the topic says that the platform was (or should have been) version D and you have version A and B in the pictures
see www.valka.cz

yeah, you're right about the Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.D platform, I didn't notice that remark
but as for the Artillerie Panzer Beobachtungswagen that the article refers to - that's really just a project, apparently not even a prototype was made
some of the photos of the Sd.Kfz.251/18 on the Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.D platform could be used as illustration (if it was produced, it would look like this)

I think there's a small problem - the article says that searie production hasn't started and the table says ZERO for the number of units produced. Even if it is possible that a prototype was made, it will certainly not be identical to the Sd.Kfz.251/18, as they are two different versions. Sd.Kfz.251/18 is NOT Artillerie Panzer Beobachtungswagen.

I dared to contradict the consideration of my colleague Gebirgsjäger and that it is Sd.Kfz.251/18.
I did not contradict the mentioned table and the article by my colleague Bran.
P. S.
The prototype mentioned here was developed by Hilary Doyle and published in PT 15-4 on pages 47 to 49 and the text was accompanied by Lukas Friedli on pages 76 to 78.

Only today did I come across this discussion about the design of this vehicle. Basically, this is already solved by scans from Pz. Tracts that Jirka gave here.
However, I will point out the erroneous designation of the vehicle with the counter as Sd.Kfz. 251/18, which is most likely as unrealized as the vehicle in this subject.
In the case of "counter OT" it is a reconstruction of an unknown, but probably a larger number of standard vehicles Sd.Kfz. 251 most versions of Ausf. A and Ausf. B. No available manual is mentioned in this version. According to the number of photographs, it can be concluded that this adjustment took place in large numbers. Their shape and dimensions are more or less identical, resp. similar, which could indicate that it was some kind of factory production. At that time, there was no serial production of the command modification and therefore the available vehicles were converted. It was not until 1943 that mass-produced versions of the "recycled designation" 251/3 (originally a tractor and ammunition for I.G. 18) began to be mass-produced, and they gradually replaced these temporary ones. It is interesting that this counter can also be found on a later version of Ausf.C/D (?) (See the collection of photos on the Polish website).
