12.06.2016 - USA: střelba v gay klubu v Orlandu na Floridě, 49 mrtvých

Twenty-nine-year-old Omar Mateen, an Afghan-American, stormed into a gay club in Orlando, Florida, and began shooting people indiscriminately. Police neutralized him after a brief shootout. His attack left 49 dead and 53 wounded. Police said the attacker was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a handgun and was also carrying unspecified explosives.
It is the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. Many of the wounded are in critical condition and the death toll may yet rise. According to several sources, the attacker claimed affiliation with the Islamic State. The governor of Florida has declared a state of emergency.

The attacker should have declared himself to IS before the attack, and it must be said that IS itself declared itself to the act (or rather its perpetrator) (however, here one can also consider just taking advantage of the situation). Omar Mateen had already been investigated twice by the FBI, once for statements he was supposed to have made in front of his associates and the second time for his acquaintance with one of the assassins (here, however, the investigation found that they knew each other very little and even the contact between them was rather insignificant). Interestingly, he had acquired the weapons (albeit perhaps a smaller weapon - a revolver or pistol he had owned before) only a week or so before the crime, and quite legally. Mass murders - or shootings of large groups of people are fairly common in the US, with about one a week nowadays. President Obama has stated that America (the US) is becoming rather indifferent to these crimes, or rather, is already taking it for granted. It should be mentioned that most of the attacks are carried out by mentally disturbed individuals or by people who are taking revenge on a certain group of people (e.g. classmates, teachers, etc.). Although the attacker claimed to be a member of IS, his father expressed himself in a way that he did not see any religion in it, but rather hatred (and probably contempt) for homosexuals; the attacker had allegedly seen a homosexual couple kissing recently and should have been disgusted by it at the very least. His ex-wife then described him as a rapist, but denied that he was a believer (certainly not a radical one). So it is still possible that he only joined IS "out of spite", deliberately to confuse the clues leading to the real reason for his actions, etc.
Otherwise, from the time the attack started to the time the police intervention was carried out and ended, about 3 hours passed. One policeman was injured during the intervention, and his life was saved by a Kevlar helmet. As the ambulances could not cope with the onslaught of the injured, the policemen also transported the injured in their official vehicles.
